I have now read the book, and although it was not what I expected, it was superb. I'm sure I would have loved it as a child, and even now I'm impressed with its skillful use of language, cleverness, and thoughtfulness. It does not take place in the world of "In the Mothers' Land", however -- is it a different book? Its setting is a standard fairy-tale land. Nonetheless, all the important characters are women/girls -- even the Red Cat, who, though not exactly human, is definitely female. The emphasis throughout is on thoughtful problem-solving : both practical and interpersonal problems. This is something I've always enjoyed when it's done well, as here.
