From back flyleaf of dust "Over the centuries since the first Book of Common Prayer in 1549, many Anglican writers have produced devotional commentaries related to the Prayer book. This volume, complied and edited by Dr. J. Robert Wright, brings together selections from the most important of these devotional commentaries. Classicical Anglican sources from 1552 on are included, making this a timeless companion to the spiritual and devotional nature of our Prayer Book."
This is not an easy read. It may not even be a book I would recommend for a general audience. However, this book is a must read for Anglican clergy and those interested in knowing the Anglican Reformers. This book is divided into easily referenced sections:
1. On Prayer in Common 2. On Prayer from a Book 3. The Calendar and Liturgical Year 4. The Daily Office 5. The Litany 6. Christian Initiation 7. The Holy Eucharist 8. Marriage 9. Reconciliation of the Penitent 10. Ministration to the Sick 11. Burial of the Dead 12. Ordination 13. Catechetical Instruction and Preaching
Each section has multiple readings from Anglican Divines and works that originated between the 16th and 19th century. I don't normally give a five star rating to a book, but this book is a wealth of knowledge. Knowledge that is desperately needed for some kind of identity in the Anglican Church. It is also a good reference for those who are looking for primary sources from people that shaped the Anglican Church between those four centuries. The only draw back is that it is out print and therefore hard to come by at a reasonable price. One might hope that this book becomes an essential reader for those who are pursuing Holy Orders or are in Holy Orders and therefore might be re-printed.
