“He’s trying to scare us back to Leeds!” Not yet ready to reconcile with Carma and Lyman, Deem decides to spend Christmas with David and Winn. Away from Lyman’s compound, they camp out in the empty house left by David’s parents in Ivins. Hoping to enjoy a quiet Christmas with each other, they deck the home with old decorations discovered in the attic, and Deem sets about baking massive amounts of cookies – a tradition she used to perform with her mother. It seems like the three of them will be able to have a merry Christmas on their own, away from Lyman and Carma. However, something in the house has other ideas. Confronted with their own ghosts, Deem, Winn, and David must discover the deeply buried secrets that haunt the homestead. Is it something that Lyman has cooked up, trying to force them to return to Leeds? Or is it a new threat that will require Lyman’s help to solve? Spend a Christmas with Deem, Winn, and David…and find out! Inheritance is a novella of 28k words, and Book 9 in The Downwinders series. I was so happy to have Winn and David back from Europe. It seemed like they were holding something back about their trip, just like Deem is about James, the Dark River, and the things Mazlo said. They're all hiding from one another. I'm not sure if I trust Lyman, even though he kind of apologized. It seems like he has his own agenda, and no one is going to get in the way. I thought having Carma actually leave the house to help at David's house was a great way for her to redeem herself. I hope she really is trustworthy. The descriptions of the various scenes inside the house were perfectly vivid. I could definitely imagine Deem seeing herself walking towards them in the garage and how disturbing that would be. I kind of knew that they would enter to nothing when Carma came with them. Her showing up added a new presence in the house. Maybe if she'd spent the night in the house, left and came back (like Winn, David and Deem), she would have experienced something similar. The whole thing when with the cellophane worm, scalpel, (gravitron like) ride (in a stationary house) and tidal blood river was awesome, please don't think me odd. It was so visceral that I could picture each image as if it were playing out in front of me. Phonecia is a character that I'd like to see them encounter again.
