Rather than being silent, as in canon, Darcy and Elizabeth strike up a conversation over a game of chess. I enjoyed the conversation, and didn't find it to be predictable at all. It could use some editing, but that didn't detract from my enjoyment. (I do think that Mr. Darcy would not have rough hands.) I hope Lady Geek Chick continues to enjoy writing.
The Regency era rules were strict about what was appropriate to say and do, and that included having chaperones. So it makes sense that time alone would afford more opportunity for more unguarded conversation. Even in this day and age, I certainly find that to be true when I'm with a single person, as opposed to multiple people.
The long and the short of this one-shot: In canon, Lizzy and Darcy spent half an hour together in the Netherfield library not talking. What if they did talk over a chess game.
>>Rating: Clean >>No Angst >>Timeline: Adorable conversation in the library at Netherfield over a chessboard. Discussions of the troubles in raising young girls, an apology for the Assembly insult, and a new beginning for ODC.
