A slant rhyme is a rhyme of words that have similar but not identical sounds. With a love so deep for music, Soar Major was well aware of the musical term but never noticed how it also described love. All her life she dreamt of being a singer, so when the deal of a lifetime was presented to her at an early age, she didn’t hesitate to take it. Soon after, she found herself in the cold, with a broken heart and shattered spirit. Nafeek Howard was trying to walk away from the streets while he still had his life. He put everything he had into a childhood dream in hopes that it’ll all pay out big. With his sights keened in on the hustle of the music business, he wasn’t looking for love, just looking for the next big star. That was until he was intrigued by a soulful bartender with a broken spirit. Two different people on the same path will soon find out how much of a Slant Rhyme love really is!
Initial thoughts.. this is pure toxicity and trauma bonding and I honestly don’t know how I feel about it.
This definitely needed some trigger warnings. A content warning? Something! I don’t have any triggers that make me stop reading but the description versus what I read threw me off! The way it started off was insane, completely unexpected, i'm still a little shook. Soar needed help, like real long term help not a relationship. Her and Nafeek seemed like they fell in love through his half assed attempt to save her. Parts of their relationship were likable while other parts made me want to tell them to run FAR away from each other. The story is not terrible but has some missing pieces for me. I feel like my head is just spinning from all the wild stuff that was happening! Again it wasn’t terrible but the book description definitely needs to be updated and some TWs for sure!
I enjoyed this book and loved Nafeek and Soar together. I happy when they finally got it together because it was so much back and forth with them. I was glad Soar decided to get help because she was in a dark place for a long time And she deserved to experience love and happiness.
Omg the way Nafeek took care of the people he loved !! Top tier. Soar was so strong !!! Together they are so fire !!! I wish I could’ve got a lil more of sapphire. Great read !!
Evelyn, you have a way with words. A beautiful way with words. You show darkness and shine light. This book was amazing. There’s a bit of Soar in a lot of us. Here’s to holding on.
Soar was perfectly imperfect! Nafeek what a man. The two of them together stressed you out, but had you rooting for them all at the same time! Beautiful!
I fell in love with Soar! She had to deal with so much pain. It was clear to see how music was her gift. It was like God gave her what she needed to heal herself. He truly worked the bad out for her good. Sapphire is the best sister in literature. Mental health is the prevailing issue in this book. It was presented in such a realistic way. Often we think of people like Soar as being weak when really she was incredibly strong. The way we view mental illness impedes people from accepting help. Nafeek had his issues but he was a stand up guy. He has his own unique pain to deal with yet he was loyal almost to a fault. Hyell didn’t deserve happiness but trie to life lost of cruel and evil people in and out of the industry are living successful...seemingly happy lives!
Soar has been through a lot. Her parents treated her bad and she fell in love with a man who was old enough to know better to have a relationship with her knowing he had a fiancee. Nafeek heard her sing and wanted her on his record label. They started messing around and their relationship came with problems. I really loved them together. Glad they ended up together. Hopefully we get a book about her sister Sapphire and Nafeek friend Zane. Maybe put them two together.
Let me just say that this book DEFINITELY had me in my freakin feelings. I felt so bad for Soar and at this same time I was so over her💩(if that makes any sense)😂 I’m glad she had a sister like Sapphire, because baaabby. I loved Nafeek and how he was with Soar. I couldn’t stand Hyell and I was really wishing that he got more than he did. Oh yeah and I was really over here shedding damn tears 😂 this was definitely a 5⭐️ read.
This was a quick but captivating story that I would recommend to anyone. Soar and Nafeek had their fair share of issue, but with the help of each other they pushed through. This book also brought up the issue of mental health in the black family which I can appreciate. Many think it doesn’t exist and this book brings life to that issue and the problems we face with self care.
You left me speechless Soar had been through so much the way Hyell did her was so wrong he beat her like she wasn't anything and made her lose her baby. Soar was blackballed and afraid so she turned to pills to help her cope with life. Then here comes NaFeek he wanted what was best for her but Soar keep her guard up and I understood why. Nafeek had some loose ends to tie up and he did. I'm so glad Soar started seeing a therapist. Sapphire loved her sister.
Omg Nafeek and Soar are goals! His love for her is sooo touching. I wasn’t expecting the book to be that good. I literally could not stop reading, on the end of my bed the entire time! I’m sad it’s a stand-alone, because I’d def be looking for the 2nd part right now!! 💙💙
