DRA benchmark book.

The message of this story confuses me. The main character is not nice to his younger cousin for not calling fouls in basketball games and believes this to be the reason his team loses. The younger cousin (come to find out) is afraid that his family will be deported from the U.S. and sent back to Cuba if he makes anyone upset... like for calling a foul in basketball (a bit far-fetched in my mind). The main reason for me giving this book only one star is that the main character and his younger cousin DO win the next game once the younger cousin is not afraid to call fouls against the other team. (Reinforcing bad behavior of immaturity and not being nice... in my mind.)

I didn't mind the read, but I can see where this book is extremely confusing to students. Students need to read this book and do all the steps to pass it to go onto the next reading level. Almost all of my students can not achieve that, and I think that is because how confusing this book can be.
