Read for my toddler's bedtime. Excellent counting book! Starting with one dog stands alone but if readers look left in the book, readers will notice the dog has a spy looking out of the window, then two dogs on a trike and that spy gets out of the house and run after. The story goes on to three dogs on a scooter with the spy following suit on roller skates. Then four dogs on a bike going downhill with the spy following on skateboard and so on to ten, except at ten, the counting stops because the spy was part of the head count and it was found out that the tenth one wasn't a dog and then the story did a backward counting. Super fun and fantastic read. Love the illustrations! I highly recommend everyone to read this book!

Thank you Abrams Kids for the opportunity to read and review!

TWO DOGS ON A TRIKE takes young readers on a fast-paced counting adventure that's sure to engage...and make numbers fun. In this one-to-ten and back again escapade, a runaway dog hooks up with one buddy after another in a canine transportation fest--clueless to the fact that the disapproving family cat is in hot pursuit.

The action escalates as the dogs up the ante, switching from a trike to a scooter to a bike to a trolley and so on. Fur and ears fly in the wind (and plenty of pizza is eaten) as the dogs zoom along--no two of them alike.

Illustrator Robin Rosenthal packs her characters with style, personality, color, humor, and a touch of irony. There's no shortage of visual details for young readers to pour over, and they'll love finding the deadpan cat on the margins of every scene.

With crisp, active rhymes and plot-twisting surprises, author Gabi Snyder has created a canine-counting playground! Little ones learning to read and count will want to pick this book up over and over, to experience the mayhem again--and have fun with words and numbers.

Fun up-and-down counting book with tons of humor in the illustrations as the dogs are followed by (and then chased by) a cat determined to go for a ride. Kids will love all the transportation vehicles in addition to the dogs.

TWO DOGS ON A TRIKE is an adorable counting book for toddlers and preschoolers. Each page features dogs in different kinds of vehicles with a cat following not far behind as we count up to ten. At ten, you realize that the cat is in the spaceship, and that the cat is chasing away the dogs as we could down from ten to one. The book then ends with a cute next of two cats on a trike with a mouse in the background.

What I loved: The illustrations are adorable and there are so many cool vehicles and dogs all throughout. The cat in the background is also a nice touch, and this is a super-fun way to count from one to ten and back down again. This is great for toddlers and preschoolers who may have aged out of the simpler counting books and is perfect for dog or vehicle fans. The font is also nicely large and clear, making it really easy to read aloud.

What left me wanting more: As a small point, the book description gives a story line that is not so clear from the book (that the family cat is rounding up the dogs to bring them home). The book is still fun no matter what story is ascribed.

Final verdict: Counting fun with dogs and vehicles, TWO DOGS ON A TRIKE is full of delightful illustrations and a simple but cute story line. Great for toddlers and preschoolers.

Please note that I received a review copy. All opinions are my own.

This is essentially a counting book with one dog after another appearing on the scene, but it’s also much more than that. Author Gabi Snyder has succeeded in creating a story with multiple layers: Counting not only up to ten, but also back down to one; modes of transportation; animals; and an exciting, fun-packed journey through the city, the countryside, over the sea, up in the air and even into outer space!

The bright, cheerful illustrations will greatly appeal to young kids. Extra details not explicitly mentioned in the text add an extra dose of humour, such as the mean expressions of a scary cat who chases the dogs, and the looks of panic on the dogs’ faces as they flee back home via the same modes of transportation by which they arrived, just in the opposite order. The words and pictures work together beautifully to create an ingenious mirror structure, with each scene in the first half of the story mirrored in the second.

As well as being a fun read, this book would make a perfect gift for a new baby or a toddler’s birthday, as well as a useful addition to any early years library!

A super-fun take on the cat-dog chase concept! Kids will beg to turn pages, thriving on the cat's silent interplay with the plot. With a central focus on characters playing together, young children will relate immediately. The text is simple, promoting independent reader confidence and counting upon rereads. I love the conflict which builds subtly and allows the reader to be in on a secret unbeknownst to the characters. This builds to a glorious surprise (that kids will find hilarious), and prompts a circle back around to the beginning (again through the art.) As an educator, I would use this in the library to help students generate the unspoken story of the cat. Younger students could create thought bubbles, and slightly older students could write from the cat's perspective. (Or even the story of the surprise visitor at the end!)

Two Dogs on a Trike is a fun-filled ride as the story counts from one to ten and backwards again. The dogs have various modes of transportation with my favorite being the ferry where a mini concert takes place. These dogs are having so much fun they don’t even notice a disapproving feline is following them. So many little details are thoughtfully featured on each page making this a book you’ll read over and over again. The ending has a cute twist that begs the question of their being a part two of which I hope there is.

This adorable counting book zooms along at a fun, fast clip. The illustrations are so sharp and clever and each dog has its own distinct personality. I can’t get over how great the the cat is--its facial expressions had me smiling at every page! And just when you think you know where the story is going, a fun twist turns things on its head. This book will have little ones shouting “read it again!”

This is such a delightful counting book, perfect for preschoolers learning to count to 10 and back again. Snyder's spare text pairs with Rosenthal's whimsical illustrations to show a sneaky cat who pursues numerous dogs fleeing on trikes, planes, trolleys and more. When they all arrive home has the cat learned its lesson? Young readers will delight in turning the last pages to find out. This book would be wonderful in preschool/kindergarten classrooms as well as part of a math lesson.

Think "Go, Dog, Go!" but with a counting component (forwards and backwards!) and an ending that makes sense, and you've got this fun and delightful book by Gabi Snyder. Robin Rosenthal's art is simultaneously modern and vintage and is the perfect touch to this perfect paced book with avant garde flair. Kids will delight in having it read to them or reading it themselves!

This book seems simple on the surface, but it is nothing short of brilliant. So many layers in so few words - counting (up and down), modes of transportation, a thrilling chase, a circular ending, and hilarious to boot! One of my favorites of 2020.

Who would’ve thought a counting book could be so much fun? This counting book will keep the whole family engaged with illustrations that are packed with funny little details, hilarious facial expressions, and a silent narrative in the subtext brewing.

One by one, dogs join in on this increasingly far-out adventure as the reader counts from one to ten d… wait a minute…

“THAT’S NOT A DOG!”

The dogs finally discover the nonchalant cat that’s been silently following them all this time and we start counting backwards from ten to one as the dogs start fleeing.

Once the cat finally locks the gate on the first dog who escaped (presumably the family dog), we see the cat set off on his own adventure (on a trike, no less). But wait, is that a mouse following HIM?

The starred picture book debut from author Gabi Snyder and illustrator (and art director/designer) Robin Rosenthal, Two Dogs on a Trike is a deliciously bright, funny, and memorable counting book.

As Two Dogs on a Trike opens, readers can see what appears to be one lonely dog waiting to sneak by an open gate- but what or who are they waiting for? And... why is there a kitten (sipping from a steaming mug) keeping such close tabs on the dog? Aha! The dog has gotten a ride with their friend- now there are two dogs on a trike! Counting up to ten and back down again, a beatific and growing group of canine friends take different methods of transportation (trolley, train, ferry, plane, and more!) while adventuring, dancing, and munching on pizza. Everything seems to be cool and perfect until the count of ten dogs leads to one cat-astrophic reveal!

Two Dogs on a Trike has all the makings of being not only a go-to for repeated readings, but also a big read aloud hit at toddler-and-up storytimes: the smooth and quick pace of the one-to-ten counting, the straightforward rhyming, and the marvelously eye-catching illustrations and visual gags all add up to one super book. For readers who love animal books and for those that love picture books with transportation elements- it's all here! There is also the added feature of the stern- yet ridiculously adorable- calico kitten readers can seek-and-find on every page of story. The ending of Two Dogs on a Trike may leave readers in giggles and wondering if a sequel featuring more feline friends might be in order!

Readers who love the zany comedy of books such as John Himmelman's Chickens to the Rescue; the sweetness of books such as Joyce Wan's Count My Cupcakes 123; or laugh-out-loud picture book authors like Jan Thomas, Ame Dyckman, or Ross Burach might especially love the genuine joy and hijinks (and counting!) within Two Dogs on a Trike. Readers can look forward to a new book by Gabi Snyder and illustrator Stephanie Graegin called Listen set to release in 2021, while Robin Rosenthal has illustrated a board book series called Big Ideas for Little Philosophers set to release next month!

In this fun counting story, a tall dog in striped pants hops on a passing trike, setting into motion a funny series of events. With each page turn, a new dog joins the canine party--and, indeed, it feels like a party as the bright-eyed dogs skip from trolley to train to boat. Never more than a tail's length behind, though, is the real star of this story: the family cat. Snyder's simple, readable words and Rosenthal's vibrant, flat colors and simple shapes fit the story just right. Expressive and joyful. The cat in pursuit is sure to make everyone laugh! TWO DOGS ON A TRIKE is perfect for little vehicle-enthusiasts learning to count.

The SASS of this cat is a lovely thing to behold! Silly dog to think it can sneak out and go gallivanting with its friends. Count up to 10 and back down again as a group of dogs go adventuring by trike, by balloon, by rocket ship, and by all sorts of vehicles. What could possibly stop their fun? Not everything is as it seems! Watch out for a cat with sass and great taste in snacks.

Bold, graphic style illustrations keep the focus on the counting and the clear text. Mister had fun with this one. I recommend it for your next counting adventures.

The story begins:
One dog stands alone.
With this simple sentence the reader is invited into the pages where they can join an ever-increasing number of dogs as they roll, scoot, fly, and float on all modes of transportation. They don’t see, however, that they are being followed – by a sneaky cat!
Panic-stricken, a countdown ensues as the dogs retrace their journey. In a twist, the story begins again with a new cast of characters.

Why you need to add Two Dogs On A Trike to your picture book collection:
This is an example of a true picture book where the retro 80’s illustrations combine perfectly with the text to create a fast-paced humorous story.
The dogs (and cat) each have their own unique personality. The expressions on their faces are expressive and convey their strong emotions.
The clear, concise rhyming text is perfect to read aloud. I predict this will be one of the first books many children will learn to read on their own.
Children will love to go through this book over and over looking for and counting each dog as they practice the math concept of adding on and then subtracting.
Transportation, dogs, and a cat in a counting book… Two Dogs On A Trike is a modern day classic!

I’ve been wanting to read Two Dogs on a Trike by Gabi Snyder and Robin Rosenthal since I saw the cover reveal on Tara Lazar’s blog last fall! Even then I knew it would be fun.

So what does Two Dogs on a Trike have to offer exactly? Let’s break it down…
First, there are dogs. Lots of dogs. Dogs on vehicles like trikes and bikes and trains and hot air balloons and…well, you’ll just have to see, I guess!
Second, there is a cat. Just one cat. And more vehicles. And… what is that cat doing here anyway?
Third, these colorful creatures fill a counting book that will thrill children and their grown-ups, even grown-ups who already know how to count. (After all, who couldn’t enjoy a dog party on a submarine?!) Even better, after counting up, we get to count back down!
Fourth, it rhymes!
Fifth, there’s a twist…I’ll just leave it at that.

In conclusion... "Two Dogs on a Trike" is a silly counting book with a fun surprise, and I'd highly recommend it!

And, last but not least, if you'd like ideas on conversations to have with your kids while reading, you can check out my full review here: https://joypitcairn.com/2020/04/18/co...

I adore a counting book with a good story and this one is oh so fun. The words are concise and encourage little ones to count the growing number of dogs and later subtract as the dogs depart. The illustrations however tell the story of a rather determined cat chasing after them. This adds an excellent layer of suspense, adventure and humor that will keep kids coming back to this book again and again. A counting book with dogs, cats, all manner of transportation, and a little humor - really what more could you want? A excellent book for toddlers and preschoolers learning to count.

Count up to ten with the help of a lot of dogs and one sneaky cat in this picture book. One dog is alone, but soon joins another dog on a trike. They become three dogs on a scooter, four on a bike. Then five dogs on a trolley and six on a train. Seven on a ferry and eight on a plane, then nine dogs in a hot-air balloon. Ten dogs in a UFO? Wait! Is that a cat? Soon the dogs are moving back through the vehicles, decreasing by one each time, until there are two cats on a trike.

Told very simply, this book has a wonderful fast pace that makes it great fun to share aloud. The vehicles are varied and interesting, making each page turn a surprise. The rhymes are gentle and add to the wildness of the book at just the right moments. The art is graphic and strong, the dogs silly and varied with googly eyes. Readers will see the cat right from the start, which creates a tug of anticipation through the entire first part of the book.

A great book that happens to have counting too. Appropriate for ages 2-4.

Two Dogs on a Trike is a humorous, rollicking counting book that is a highly recommended addition to the bookshelf - in school, daycare and at home. Snyder's restraint in text allows for the book to roll along on the cadence of the prose and to highlight the foundational skill being developed - counting. There is no embellishment of the language that detracts from the ability of the reader to focus. It is the lively illustrations that invite the reader to parse out emotion, action, and humor - making this book a perfect marriage between author and illustrator. Young readers will delight in the varied breeds of dogs that expand with each added transportation vehicle - and enjoy spreads such as the one where they are all enjoying pizza onboard a train! And the middle spread that changes everything will be something for young children to anticipate again and again. Perfect to engage any child who loves dogs, humor, and is entering the wonderful world of counting forward and back.

This clever counting adventure starts with a bang as two dogs head out together on one trike. The dogs increase in number and energy as the story progresses. Each page turn shows them zooming around in a different kind of transportation as the spying cat follows along in the background. Check out the fashion helmets! They change every time the cat gets behind the controls of another vehicle.

The obliviously happy dogs don’t notice the cat until nine of them blast off into space, and the cat makes ten as the pilot of their spaceship! In this hilarious cat chases dogs countdown, the dogs attempt to flee from the determined cat. The detailed illustrations keep the action rolling. There is so much to see in the pictures that children will be interested in reading this book again and again.

On one level, this is a counting book with a very short, simple text, guiding the reader up through 10 and back down again. But it is so much more! The action runs through a variety of transportation modes: bike, trolley, train, ferry, plane, hot-air balloon, spaceship. Dog-loving kids will enjoy spotting their favorite breed, dressed in humorous outfits (one even wears an Elizabethan collar). The dynamic flips mid-point in the story when a cat gets the upper hand. We cat-lovers know how cats excel at self-importance and the hilarious illustrations (and cat costuming) do not disappoint in that regard. Full of visual surprises, this book will hold up to repeated readings and is sure to become a favorite. Highly recommended.
