I can't even count how many books I've read about writing. Some were great, some were okay, and some were awful. It's hard to surprise me when it comes to how-to-write books but Jaimie Engle did just that. Write A Book That Doesn't Suck offers great advice I haven't seen anywhere else and it's written in a conversational, entertaining way I really appreciated. As if that weren't enough, Jaimie used examples from all my favorite YA books! I know I'll be reading this book again. Loved it!

I found this guide to be extremely helpful and insightful. Its use of contemporary, mainstream examples (from popular fiction) when explaining story writing techniques was very relatable and made concepts easier to digest. The book was also very thought-provoking and analyzed the development of protagonists and antagonists, internal struggle and subplots in a way you typically don't see books on this same topic do. I'd recommend this to aspiring, new and seasoned authors alike.

Write a Book that Doesn’t Suck is a fabulous how-to glimpse into the various story elements that a writer needs to focus on to produce a well-rounded book. If you are like me and dream of writing a novel one day, this book would be a great resource for you.

I loved that the book was formatted like a workbook with thought-provoking questions at the end of each chapter and a space to write notes and ideas down. The book also makes connections to well-known books and movies like Harry Potter and The Hunger Games. This really helped me as an extremely novice writer to understand how certain story elements and devices were used by an author in well-known stories.

I think this would be the type of book I would come back to many times during the writing process. If one of your 2020 goals is to start writing your own book, check this one out!
