I picked this up in a bookstore in Heidelberg, Germany. It's a wonderful small book to hold in your hand, since it's only 15x10x2 cm. The pages are thin but sturdy. It's intended for German learners of English, so the bottom of each page has the more difficult words translated into German. I wish I had such a book made the other way around, since I speak hardly any German!
The theme of the book is British colonialism and its consequences. It contains the following short stories:
Joseph Conrad, An Outpost of Progress
W. Somerset Maugham, The Force of Circumstance
George Orwell, Shooting an Elephant
Doris Lessing, The Second Hut
Chinua Achebe, Dead Men's Path
R. K. Narayan, A Horse and Two Goats
Ngugi wa Thiong'o, A Meeting in the Dark
Muriel Spark, The Black Madonna
Salman Rushdie, Good Advice Is Rarer than Rubies
Qaisra Shahraz, A Pair of Jeans
Hanif Kureishi, My Son the Fanatic
The stories are very well written, but hardly ever end well. They focus on the destruction wrought by the clash of cultures.
