My husband and I read this book to our toddler daughter no less than 20 times a day. It was a book I received in 2004 and was a favorite of mine as a child because of the cute hearts and little rhymes. However, as we have read this book approximately 1000 times over the past 4 weeks, we have noticed some things and have questions. These questions literally are not important but we have had in depth discussions about them and feel they should be shared.
1. If the other pets gets balloons why doesn’t the goldfish that appears twice? The cat gets a balloon even though it’s a bad idea. Why shouldn’t the fish?
2. The page with Rufus the dog does not rhyme. One and open does not rhyme and it just doesn’t flow as well reading out loud as the other pages.
3. Where are the parents all day?
4. Where is the garden that grandma is working in in relation to Marissa’s house because it’s not seen elsewhere in the book?
5. For saying oops stop it might go pop, why give the cat the balloon?
6. Where is grandpa bicycling away to when grandma is walking away in the previous page?
7. This is the biggest one. Aunt Jen is clearly a single mom living in a trailer park because that’s the story that the picture tells. Where is the trailer park in relation to everything else?
8. Cousin Mandy is no where on the page with aunt Jen. Then we see her on the swings and aunt Jen is walking away leaving her child unattended which seems like questionable parenting.
9. Was Marissa’s father gone a full work day? Clearly time has passed so how much? Also cousin Mandy is present when the dad comes home so again where is the trailer park in relation to everything else?
10. Where has Marissa’s mom been all day? Was she at work too? If so then was Marissa and her sister unsupervised all day?
11. The goldfish appears on the floor. The cat would absolutely kill it.
12. Last page, where is the dog? Everyone else that got a balloon shows up but not Rufus. He was left out and that just seems rude.
We would love to have answers to our questions but for now we speculate and have discussions after our daughter goes to bed.

Read
March 5, 2008It looks like a fun Valentines-y kind of book. After the fourth reading, we were as bored as our toddler.

This was a cute little book that everyone enjoyed. The little puffy hearts were pretty and the simple story was fun. I recommend checking this one out and I'd even buy it.
