Elizabeth Blackwell was the first woman doctor of medicine in modern times, while Florence Nightingale was trained as a nurse, introducing sanitization during the Crimean War, lessening cases of cholera, typhus and dysentery. Finally, Mary Slessor, the Scottish factory girl, was the pioneer missionary of Calabar.
