American historian, educator, diplomat, devout Catholic and academic. '

He was a leading and pioneering specialist on the study of nationalism. He was elected as president of the American Historical Association over the opposition of liberals and the more explicit Anti-Catholic bias that defined the academic community of his era.

He served as United States Ambassador to Spain in World War II. Although he came under attack from the CIO, communists and other forces on the left that rejected any dealings with Francoist Spain, Hayes succeeded in his mission to keep Spain neutral during the war.

This was my 9th grade history book from long ago. I was already interested in history, and this text only whetted my appetite. Just finished re-reading it. Very nice overview of the nearly a millennia of Western History. It hits the main political, economic, scientific, and artistic events and trends. A great refresher of things I had forgotten. Found it a far easier read now then when I was a teenager.

It's a textbook. With that said, the current stock of Western Civilization textbooks for teenagers, pale in comparison. Students would be better served with this lightweight, black and white, clearly written textbook. This book gives an excellent overview of western history and culture.

I thought it was a good history book. i learn a lot about the past which i love. It was a slow reader i wish i could still remember all the names of each person they talk about but that's to many for me. I would advise people to read this if only they need it for a history class or for a project. its really might not be for everyone that does not like to read about history.
