Drey Winston is a fierce competitor who enjoys challenging her mind and body. But when it comes to her heart-no one ever gets close enough to compete for it. Having grown up believing she was an unwanted burden to her parents, she prefers to keep her feelings well hidden. Just when her hard-fought goals are finally within reach, the audacious Jesse Devlin comes along to breach her carefully guarded defenses. After a disastrous marriage early in life, Jesse Devlin prefers strings-free relationships. Confident and outgoing, he gets along well with women, but his natural charm can't seem to penetrate Drey Winston's aloofness. While attempting to win her over, he's the one who ends up losing his heart. Can this commitment-phobic bachelor convince the stubbornly independent woman he loves that his feelings-and hers-are the real deal?

I received this audiobook free as an Audiobook Obsession Reviewer for an honest review. This was a great story of two people who refuse to accept their attraction. The story gives you the ups and downs of a relationship. Didn't want to turn off this audiobook because I just wanted to see how the author was going to bring these two people together. I really enjoyed this story. The narrator seems to need a little bit more work becoming the characters. I sometimes couldn't tell who was talking in the story and would get confused.

A great read!

I was immediately drawn to the characters in Joyce Holmes latest romance, Visual Effects. The story begins as Drey starts her new life in Hollywood and meets a handsome, if somewhat reprehensible, man from her past. Will he remember her? This is just one of many questions the reader will have as they travel along with Drey in her new career.

Sharing an apartment with her best friend Carly, Drey demonstrates just how good a friend she can be as Carly goes through the ups and downs of romance. Not that Drey is a stranger to heartbreak herself as we find out along the way. Will she continue to shut herself away from love? Or will the right man break through her defences.

And Drey isn’t the only one with a past. Her handsome co-worker, Jesse, has a history of his own. As we move through the story, it becomes clear that these two star-crossed lovers will have to overcome a lot before there is even a chance of a happily-ever-after for either of them.

Then, just when you think things are getting hot in the romance department, there is yet another twist in the plot to keep things interesting. Will a lover from Drey’s past ruin everything before it has a chance to begin?

Bring in additional family members with their own troubles and a proposal for Carly and you have a terrific story that is a must for your summer reading stash.

Rated: 4 stars (Nice, easy read with substance)

Drey Winston is a fierce competitor who enjoys challenging her mind and body. But when it comes to her heart—no one ever gets close enough to compete for it. Just when her hard-fought goals are finally within reach, the audacious Jesse Devlin comes along to breach her carefully guarded defenses. Can this commitment-phobic bachelor convince the stubbornly independent woman he loves that his feelings—and hers—are the real deal?

I know this book has some emotional subject matters, and I was afraid I might find it heavy going and not entirely enjoyable, but I was pleasantly surprised. It is written in a light and easy-to-read way and the emotional aspects just worked to give the story substance. I do prefer more showing to telling in a book and Visual Effects was a little more telling than I’m used to, but I understand this is a personal preference. All in all it was a good, easy read and I found it relaxing and entertaining – can’t ask for more.

Andrea (Drey) Winston is excited about her new position at a visual effects post-production house in LA, even if it is temporary, and even if it means working with the handsome Jesse Devlin, who she has pegged as a womanizer. He is intrigued by her, but she is determined to dislike him, despite her growing attraction for him. However, the better she gets to know him, the more she discovers about his hidden depths, particularly his devotion to his family and his reasons for distrusting women.

Instead of bringing them together, their one night of passion drives a wedge between them. The conflicts keeping them apart are based primarily on assumptions and miscommunication.

Drey’s antipathy and mistrust of Jesse is hard to fathom, but while her character is occasionally frustrating, Jesse is engaging and likable. Secondary characters—Tia, Carly, Danny, and Gramps—add depth to the story. Emotionally appealing, even if the manufactured reasons for Drey and Jesse’s problems can be annoying.
