What a brilliant book. Oil exploration would have been relatively new, and scuba diving as well, when it was written.
The book is set near Sumatra so we learn lots about life at the equator, volcanoes, tidal waves, as well as the meat of the tale which is about salvage tugs and an oil rig and how to sabotage either one. The local people are treated with courtesy and respect. They provide some of the most heroic characters, including Morse radio operators and steam boiler engineers. The main speaking characters are British and almost everyone is a man - at this time I expect that only men worked in these industries. We follow the crew of the tug Bulldog.

Happily, then, the bookplate inside this secondhand copy says it was presented to a girl called Lucy as first in her science class in 1975. I hope she enjoyed the marvellous adventure.

Wikipedia tells me that the tug Bulldog appeared in 11 books and this was the tenth. As AR Channel the same author wrote more great books (aimed at boys) including the wonderful Finland set Phantom Patrol in 1940.
