"When Man Listens" has often been referred to as "a simple version of the Alcoholics Anonymous Book". It is a life altering book that transforms a person's relationship with God. This new empowering relationship then alters every aspect of that person's life. Problems get resolved, and difficulties disappear. This epic making book has transformed the lives of tens of thousands of people over the last century. Although written almost a century ago the words ring true today and it as though they were written for the 21st century human being. Although the book is Christian based, it's teachings and principles apply equally to all faiths. This is a must read for anyone in a recovery program, and for others who are desirous of change their lives for the better.

A short tract extolling the benefits of direct communication with God. Written for members of the Oxford group. One can tell how much this influenced AA thinking regarding the steps. There are phrases in here that seem like they were directly imported into the Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous. Topics covered include Surrender, character defects, amends, prayer, and meditation. The final chapter is a utopian call for a God centered world in which believers take action to bring God into all their affairs. Historically pertinent, most valuable to members of AA and other 12 step recovery programs.

My edition also includes a brief essay by Emmet Fox, a proponent of New Thought who influenced the AA founders.

A beautiful kick in the teeth

This is an instructional book which was originally published as a pamphlet by Rose to tell a newcomer to the Oxford Groups how to form a connection to G-d and how to hear instructions from G-d to the committed and surrendered member. Alcoholics Anonymous adopted this books methodology as its eleventh step of recovery, in brief. This small book gives one the original edition of seeking guidance from your Creator, in total.
One of the most important gifts that this book gave me was that it gives a very sound way of determining how guidance from G-d is actually from him. It uses the words: honesty, purity, unselfishness, and love as "checking" words to ensure that one doesn't act on self or other lower power communications. These invariably fail the test.
The methodology, which is quite simple, worked for me. I have introduced a number of people to it and taught them the simple techniques. From blocked—receiving nothing , to open channel—getting guidance strength and purposeful direction has been the outcome of all who will practice Mr. Rose's method sincerely for a fortnight, nay for even a week! It even explains how to tell if the messages one gets are from G-d or from a lower power.
An easy read and a life changing one.
