Haffner, a reporter for Swiss paper Neue Zürcher Zeitung, has spent many weeks on both sides of the German-Polish border, and took some time off to write this report in book form. He speaks both German (sure, his mother tongue) and Polish (probably a language of the heart, as his wife, who is thanked in the epilogue, has a Polish sounding name), and being Swiss he can approach people in the region with a great sense of neutrality. No, not because Swiss are neutral by nature (they certainly arent't), but because he is neither Polish nor (West) German. Haffner rounds off his own observations with information he got from studying written sources. So overall this is an interesting report of common life along the Oder and Neiße rivers in the late 90's and early 2000's with an added historical horizon.
