Guerrilla Bible Studies: Volume 1: Surprising Encounters with God

Rate this book
According to New Testament Scriptures, Jesus of Nazareth is God's Son, Israel's Messiah, and God himself in the flesh. He was born into a world marked by oppression and injustice to announce and embody God's love, launching a movement to bring salvation to the ends of the earth. This first volume of Guerrilla Bible Studies, Surprising Encounters with God, is the first in a series of four sequels to Guerrilla Reading the Bible for Liberation in the Power of the Spirit. In this book you will find practical guidelines for facilitating liberating Bible studies, and thirteen tried-and-tested studies that are designed to help people come to know God and follow Jesus through seeing him in action in the Gospels and reflecting on his life and saving work through Paul's writings. Each study offers questions, explanations, background information, invitations and suggestions for Bible study facilitators.

I received this as I was considering how to lead a Bible study for ESL students interested in learning more about Jesus. Wow, am I so glad it was put in my hands! This and the following volumes have such an incredibly grace-filled approach to all of Scripture. As a seminary student, I find the hermeneutics and exegesis used align with the most stringent study methods I’ve encountered. The original languages the Bible was written in – Hebrew and Greek – are touched on in manageable doses throughout, along with history and canonical context. Individuals, historical circumstances and whole nations we encounter in the Bible come to life with the reality of their desperate needs that clarify just how much grace and love God pours out on them by responding the way he does. Each volume of these studies invites everyone involved in the study (students and leaders!) to deeper commitment to Jesus and greater excitement and awe for his kingdom. Each study involves reading the passage one small bit at a time, explaining details to bring the story to life, and inviting everyone into deeper relationship with God. The invitations are clear and bold, and I saw people time and time again respond to them with either eager curiosity to continue studying, or clear commitments to Jesus. My family is currently using this to study together at dinner and its level of explanation and clear invitations turn out to be incredibly appropriate for the younger audience involved. What a satisfying study!
