Lovely personal story about a woman and her dog

Lovely story about a woman and her dog. I met Joni and Rio personally and they were ambassadors for the Belgian Tervuren breed. I liked how she illustrated all the various things you can do with your dog at AKC shows from a newcomers perspective and that it is not all about winning, but about the bond with your dog. Joni and Rio are truly soul mates. Great read for a dog lover.

This is a wonderful story with a lot of heart, an inspiring look at the depths of despair and of rising again thanks to a canine companion. Rio is heroic and the story transcendent. A must read.

M uch More than a Dog Story – a remarkable remembrance of living beings loved by the author

This book is nonfiction and very nicely explains why and how we might help those suffering at the end of life such as her sister and then her mother. It explains how some alternative ideas such as healthy eating (healthy eating is alternative?) in nursing homes might help people. All the dogs she’s loved before have their stories told including their end days. Then, finally Rio – after she suffers as she gives care to so many – brings her joy and happiness. Rio provides a reason for her to live. Everything isn’t perfect and they both learn so much. This book is honest, reflective, and loving.

Joni Darc Shepherd’s book captures the gift that a deep connection with a beloved pet can bring to our lives. The author takes the reader through challenges and loss within her life and delivers them through the heartache to the joy and healing power of life with a very special dog. You don’t need to be a dog-lover to appreciate the message of this story.

Very good book! Lots of details about dog shows, competitions and how to enter. Touching moments of a love between a human and her dog, coping with loss with the help of a canine companion and the use of alternative healing methods is mentioned. The last chapter had me in absolute tears as I felt so deeply the love between human and dog.
