The "London Through a Lens" column is one of the most popular in the city's Time Out magazine. Each week, a single photo from the prestigious Getty Images archive is featured, along with a detailed explanatory text. This engaging book collects some of the best of these entries, ranging from beautiful to provocative, curious to amusing. Together, they comprise a unique mosaic of one of the world's great cities.
This photo volume, a companion to “Londoners Through A Lens”, focuses on city life and events from the 1850s to the 1980s. As before, the images are well printed and - to me at least - very unfamiliar (I believe I recognized only two of the over 200). Also as before, each photo is accompanied by a generous, interesting, and often witty caption. We learn, for example, the eventual fate of a young boy selling newspapers and a reason that St. Paul’s survived the Blitz with little damage. Among images I found especially fascinating were side by sides of the 1937 and 1953 coronations and side by sides of two children’s street parties. So detailed you want to take a magnifying glass to them.
meraviglioso album della Londra del secolo scorso. Potessi, tornerei indietro anche io: non mi dispiacerebbe camminare per uno di quei quartieri ingrigiti dalla nebbia.
