Hiroshi Naito is currently one of Japan’s most active and innovative architects. His special passion is complex wooden structures and the use of ornate and artistic roofing tiles. Although he has not thus far designed outside Japan, his magnificent museums and cultural event buildings ― but also his private homes in the Tokyo area ― have created an international sensation. This publication documents selected projects from the years 1985–2005, including the new Shimane Arts Center, an extensive museum and theater complex in Masuda (Shimane Prefecture), which is scheduled to open in 2005; the municipal library in Tokamachi; the botanical museum in Makino; and the fishing museum in Toba. All of these projects are presented with authoritative technical drawings, which convey their details and material characteristics.

Subdued Solemnity-

Hiroshi Naito established his practice in 1981 and only until recent decade he began to receive international recognition for his work.
In contrast with Ito-SANAA-esque buildings that’re immensely popular in recent trend of Japanese architecture Naito's work is sentimental and grounded. He conveyed sentimentality of a place through materials, tectonics, and enhancement of monumentality. His work recovered cultural tradition with subdued solemnity.
Even though the book is light in volume but it has great contents, including beautiful photographs and well detailed fold-out drawings for each projects. It has larger and more pleasing format with better contents than Toto’s 2 volume set, except Toto has slightly more projects. And even so I would still consider this book his best monograph to date.
