Images of America: Virginia

Arlington National Cemetery

Arlington National Cemetery illustrates the evolution of the Virginia cemetery from a potter's field during the Civil War to the most prestigious military cemetery in the United States.

The cemetery contains such significant monuments and sites as the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, the Rough Rider Monument, the mast of the USS Maine, the Confederate Monument, and Freedman's Village. Today not only can one visit the graves of Supreme Court justices, George Washington Parke Custis, Pres. William Taft and Nellie Taft, and Pres. John F. Kennedy and Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, but one can also see the burial places of generals and admirals, Medal of Honor recipients, doctors and nurses, land and space explorers, inventors, and soldiers.

After finally visiting this hallowed site, I was excited to find this book. I enjoy the Images of America books. This one was nice, highlighting many of the various graves there. While I saw some, there are many that I hadn't known were buried there, so I now have a list for my next visit. My biggest complaint for this is that some of the captions made it hard to figure out which photo on the page they were meant for.

I was stationed at Ft Myer from 1979-1981 and often rode my bike or walked through Arlington Cemetery. It was beautiful and peaceful, and although I made a point of seeing some of the graves of famous people (George Catlett Marshall, John & Robert Kennedy), and toured Arlington House, I didn't know much about the other graves. This book was enlightening.

Needs lots of editing and corrections. The chapters seem to be the authors attempt at placing the photos in some order by wars and dates. The photos and there descriptions are sometimes jumbled together on one page. Would be really good with a lot more order, more editing, and for me a bit more of a selection.
