Alliance of the Quad: The New Alliance
The Underworld of Queen Torron will break into the realm of mortality this Saturday night, unless the four teenaged members of the New Alliance can defeat her and her army of Dragons, Firebirds and other monsters, pushing them back behind the Gates of Horgon. As part of their training, the New Alliance must time-travel to face Torron when both she and the Alliance are equally skilled. To achieve maximum power, the New Alliance must retrieve all four Symbols of the Quad, sent to different places and different times by their fathers, the old Alliance. Their adventure is in turn humorous and heart-breaking, along the way they learn difficult lessons about life and liberty.

Wow, I've been wanting to write a review for this book ever since I got it. I met Mr. Morrow in one of his book signings in Mint Hill, N.C., which is where I bought the entire Alliance of the Quad series. He asked that I review his books on Amazon after I read them, but it didn't work so here I am.
The first thing I would like to say is that this book takes you on quite the journey. So many things happen in a mere 241 pages, so it is really exciting. You also come to love the main characters: Jesse, Jeremy, Steve, and Matt. Each of them have their unique personalities and powers. As a junior in high school, I've read a lot of books this year, Walden, The Scarlet Letter, etc., all with their own very complex plots left for me to analyze. The New Alliance was a nice break from that, I got to journey freely into the adventure of the Alliance -- the fight between good and evil. The amount of near-death experiences got me, I feared for the characters, and celebrated at their victories. I would read this book almost every night simply because its fantasies left me in a pleasant mood before going to sleep. I thoroughly enjoyed reading The New Alliance; however, every work has their flaws.
The reason why I took out a star in my review was because the writing style wasn't to my appeal. While I think the plot is fantastic, I think the execution could have been improved. Perhaps it is because I have an advanced reading level, and this book is directed towards tweens/young teenagers? A lot of the events in the story felt unnatural to me, such as a certain romance in the story (not going to say between who because that would be a spoiler). While I did see the foreshadowing, I feel like there could have been more emotional buildup between them? Or maybe not because this was written in the third-person. I don't know, I feel like there is something missing. In addition, I also think the dialogue required more emotion in it. I mean, these people are going into battle, I'm sure they have a lot of feelings going on. I would also like to see more depth in the characters and the conflict. Where's the nuance of the story? Is everything just black and white? Good and evil? I would have loved this story even more if I had seen some internal or moral conflict, such as the Alliance felling guilty over killing soldiers who were simply following orders. Overall, I think this is a stylistic choice, and this might be just what I prefer, not what Mr. Morrow does, so it's not really a big issue.
My final verdict is that The New Alliance is good, but it could be improved. I loved the plot and all of the characters (especially Hunter), but I think the emotional aspect could have been written better. Even though I'm not giving this novel a 5 star rating, I'm going to stick with the Alliance of the Quad series. I can't wait to see both the Alliance and Mr. Morrow's writing grow throughout the series.
