本书内容是以历代的社会经济和政治制度的发展变化为基本线索,比较全面系统、简明扼要地概括了社会历史过程和重要史事、人物情况。

本教材的体例，按社会性质分“编”，按朝代分“章”，按重要事类分“节”按个体史事分“目”； 了眉目清晰，阅读方便。“目”下又分“子目”，相连续的较小朝代或文化，合数朝为一章，文化不分节，章下即为目。

本教材力求内容繁简适当，语言准确，观点鲜明，设计院流畅，为了保持本教材的科学性，也为了锻炼、提高学生阅读史学著作的能务，培养研究历史的兴趣，因之在各章节中，都适当选引了少量原始资料。为了便于阅读，对个别生僻字注出读法，古地名注出今地，政区注出治所之今地，帝王纪年注出公元。

Book 1 of the series of 2. It covers from the pre-history times to just before the Sui dynasty's reunification of North and South China in ~580CE. A no frill, detailed and comprehensive 'textbook', covering political, military, social, economic, cultural history of China. Compared to the other more recent history books that try to add too much colour and use too much fancy populist language, this is a good book to plow through to get your chinese history basics. Written in the last millenium, it still retains some of the revolutionary rhetoric here and there, commenting about 'struggle of the classes', 'reactionary feudal forces'...etc... It uses a good amount of quoted text from the historic annals of chinese history and so allows the reader to feel part of the connection with the past thousands of years of history writing.
