James VI and I had the misfortune to be the king sandwiched between Gloriana and the Personal Reign, Civil Wars and execution of Charles I. Inevitably, therefore, he is bound to receive less attention although his standing amongst monarchs has undergone a bit of a revival not least as a result of the work of several Scottish authors at pains to defend their fellow countryman. Regardless, study of James' reign is usually worthwhile. This volume in the Problems In Focus series brings together 11 different authors to examine different themes in essay chunks of 15-20 pages each. Inevitably, the result is uneven and to some extent this reflects personal interest of the reader. In my case, I was more interested in the chapter on witchcraft than the Scottish church, for example. Surprisingly, I found the slice on English Overseas Trade more interesting than I expected but sections on constitutional ideas , and the Courts as dry as I expected.
The book is an interesting read. Where else might you discover reference to the magnificently named Sir Thomas Posthumous Hoby in the North Riding?
