Some helpful ideas and principles, though I spent the whole book suspiciously questioning the author’s authority because he admitted his oldest was like 12 when he wrote this so it was hard to trust him. Hopefully all his kids have turned out good by now. I appreciated the appeal to biblical principles though since obviously those things aren’t dependent on his own experience. I also appreciate his no-nonsense tone about doing culturally deplorable (but biblically commended) things like spanking and not allowing bickering. Overall I liked the book, and found some things helpful.

I'd have to say this was one of the Best parenting books I've ever read. I went through a phase in my parenting where I was trying any and every "parenting" idea that presented itself to me . I finally got a copy of this book from my church, made a 180 and have never looked back or even considered going back to my old ways of trying to cajole my kids into obeying me! And I do hear stories quite often about how wonderful people think my children are :) Make sure you read this book with a highlighter because there are some fundamental truths inside that you will not want to forget!

My wife first read this and asked that I then read it. I will say that I don't agree with a small portion of Nelson's reasoning early on that if there is a prerequisite that God sets for a particular station then God has made that prerequisite obtainable for all people. However, with the exception of this small portion of his book, Nelson founds his arguments firmly in the Bible and does an excellent example encouraging the timid with examples and reasoning from common wisdom.

This is an excellent parenting book and one we plan to follow to help our daughter become the woman God intends her to be.

Great practical application and wrapped tight with a call to deep love and affection for your kids. From that place of security Steve Nelson gives great steps on to really lead your family well.
