From page 2, I was hooked. Arnold had an ability to blend the seductive qualities of a fictitious character with the idiosyncrasies and everyday missteps of the average reader in a way that pulled you in and made the story totally believable. The protagonist, Goldberg, perhaps a reflection of the author himself, is, at the same time, both formidable and feeble and his escapades are told with such fervor that you can't help but hold your breath and hope that he'll survive. A page-turner from the beginning with interesting twists along the way. Why didn't I give it five stars? Because it ended so abruptly that it not only left me trying to assemble the loose ends myself but it left me wanting more. Sadly, with the author's passing in 2008, we'll never really know how it was supposed to end - but maybe that's part of the charm - the author spun his tale and has left it to us to wrap up. Brilliant!
