Ron Roy has been writing books for children since 1974. He is the author of dozens of books, including the popular A to Z Mysteries®, Calendar Mysteries, and Capital Mysteries. When not working on a new book, Ron likes to teach tricks to his dog Pal, play poker with friends, travel, and read thrilling mystery books.
I have never personally known a child suffering from diabetes, but I can imagine that it isn't easy for the child or the family. The characters are just normal kids with their priorities wrong like most children have. The only real difference is that in this case, it could be deadly. So many ways this could have been avoided, but they are only kids. The parents shouldn't have to worry about their child when they are away, the older brother shouldn't have to worry about his brother's health, and the younger brother shouldn't have to be anything but a child. Despite this, life is unfair, and even the young sometimes have to worry.
If I have any complaints, it is because the book is from a different time than I grew up in. I don't believe a seven year old can be held fully accountable for their own medical needs. Kids screw up; if they didn't, they'd not be kids. If only they had had cell phones, but no way back then. For me, this book was a powerful 30-minute read.
My 4th grader picked this out of a Little Free Library before a baseball practice that we were early to, and I read the first 2 chapters to him. I finished it, myself, because I know how long it takes to get through a read-aloud with my boys. Maybe I'll be surprised this time.
Finished read-aloud April 1. Not bad!
Favorite aspect of this book - everyone in the family had a part to play in the events that led to a crisis. Not one of them blamed the others. They all took responsibility for their mistakes and apologized to each other for it.
