Stand Up to Sexting: An Open Conversation for Parents and Tweens

Rate this book
Sexting-the texting of nude or sexually suggestive images to another person-has become so commonplace that nearly 1 in 4 teens admits to being a participant. The problem is, sexting destroys self-esteem, undermines healthy relationships, leads to depression and self-harm, and can even result to run-ins with the law. It's no wonder that parents recently put sexting among their top-3 parenting concerns-but what's a parent to do? Stand Up to Sexting is the essential guidebook for parents and tweens to having an open, relaxed conversation about the dangers of sexting. Written in miniature chapters, the book includes friendly illustrations, Q&A prompts for easy conversations, and tools for staying safe. Designed for tweens ages 10-13, the book is the perfect preemptive tool for preparing your kids before their teen years strike. Chapter topics

I have a few issues with this book:

1. The book has stories and journal entries for kids to connect to and reflect about, but what kid is going to pick up a book with the subtitle: An Open Conversation for Parents and Tweens.
2. The author keeps talking about Snapchat screenshots and I wonder if she knows that we know when someone takes a screenshot.
3. As a teacher of middle and high schoolers, my kids know the contents of this book- Except maybe the dopamine part...My eyes almost rolled right out of my head when the book compared the dopamine high a boy gets when eating pizza to the dopamine high he gets when looking for erotic pictures online.)
4. I have taken bystander intervention courses and the advice offered in that section is not realistic for teens and tweens. Telling adults and confronting bullies are not always realistic options.
5. If the book is aimed at the kids, it is a bit condescending.

An ok start to a conversation with teens/tweens about sexting. The writing and tone is best suited for tweens and younger teens. I would not recommend this as the only source of info for a parent to begin discussing this topic with their child. While approachable, I wish the book was more informative and tackled topics like guilt/shame, peer pressure, and action steps for parents who suspect their child may be engaging in this behavior or is at risk of it.

Such a good introduction to the topic for kids. I liked the practical approach and the story discussions. The format and colors were great.

Poorly edited with a weird after school special tone. If there are better books on this topic aimed at teens I’d love some suggestions.
