This is based on a true story about a young puppy named Roxy that wanders off from her home, gets separated from her momma and ends up in the dog kennel. She is adopted and taken in by a farmer and his family and her new life begins. She learns all about new farm animals, supper and baths.
As an animal rescue worker, this hit home. Even though this is a children’s book, I was able to completely relate. And there is always more than just one Brutus. I literally have tears in my eyes.
The story begins with Roxy, a young puppy, deciding to take a walk on her own without her family. She is warned to watch out for the dogcatcher, but she feels she is too quick for him. She may be too quick for him, but she tumbled and landed right at his feet.
While she is in the dog pound, we get to hear her thoughts about how scared she is and how mad her mom is going to be, along with the thoughts of the boss dog, Brutus. If we could understand what dogs are thinking I believe that Mr. Stamper completely nailed it. The thoughts that Brutus has after Roxy is adopted really does mimic what us shelter workers say about some dogs that never seem to get a break.
Apparently these books are based on the author’s experiences with his family and his dog. This was a sweet book with a happy ending and I hope for life full of happy endings for Roxy. And Brutus too!
