Very good hardcover with a good condition jacket. First edition. Jacket edgeworn with scores to the laminate and sunning on the spine. Some light wear to the hardcover. A few small marks on the page block head. The pages are clean and sound, with clear text. CM
I like the author's strange turns of phrase. His memories are mostly very sad and one does not really get a sense of the time period, but one can see that Eyre suffered much because of his distant father and violent, outlandish grandfather (the father of the father). I experience real melancholy (and sympathy) while reading this sad autobiography.
The fairly low rating indicates that the book did not meet my expectations more than an actual failure of the book. Richard Eyre is one of England's finest theatre directors. I read the book to learn about his work, his approach to his work, and details about his most notable productions. I learned a lot about his family, his time at school, and a little about the things that I read the book to learn.
Look, this is a fine autobiography, it just isn't the autobiography I wanted Eyre to write.
