Detectiv de Romania volumes 1 and 2 by Silviu Iliuta have moments of humor and quirky charm, but they don’t always land. Some parts are genuinely amusing, while others feel forced or fall flat.
It’s an easy, light read, but inconsistent in tone. Fun at times, but not fully satisfying.
Detectiv de România by Silviu Iliuță had an interesting premise, but unfortunately, it didn’t quite deliver for me.
I went into this expecting a sharp, maybe even witty take on the detective genre—something that either leans into the grit of the setting or plays with it in a clever way. Instead, it felt a bit all over the place, like it wasn’t fully sure what it wanted to be.
The main character had potential, but I never fully connected with him. At times he felt more like a vehicle for the plot rather than a fully fleshed-out person, and that made it harder for me to stay invested in his journey.
SPOILERS AHEAD
The investigation itself lacked the tension I was hoping for. There were moments where things should have felt high-stakes, but the buildup wasn’t strong enough, so the payoff didn’t land. Some twists felt either too predictable or not properly developed, which took away from the overall impact.
I also struggled with the pacing. Certain parts dragged without adding much depth, while others moved too quickly, especially when it came to key reveals or character decisions.
That being said, there were glimpses of a more compelling story here—ideas that could have been explored further, characters that could have had more depth.
Final thought: A decent concept that didn’t fully come together for me. It has potential, but the execution left me wanting more.
