Chronicling 28 of Marilyn's films from "Scudda Hoo! Schudda Hay!"to the ill fated " Something's Got To Give" this little known book starts out with a tribute from Lee Strasberg of all people. With the first sentence " Marilyn Monroe was a legend. Then goes on to say that he did not know " this " Marilyn Monroe". The tribute goes on and on for more than 3 pages in small type, describing in great detail, her pain, mistakes, lapses in judgment, miscarriages, her absent father, what she wore, or didn't wear in bed, how people took advantage of her, how terribly she was treated, all the while stripping her bare in essence flaying her, himself. ( shameful, if you ask me, he had this one chance to be kind and loving, and instead he took the low road and dragged her through the mud.)
The author Michael Conway however, told her story truthfully, " she was able to excite with a simple look or gesture". " She was remarkably convincing" He goes on to detail her performance reviews with quotes including one from Kate Cameron from the New York Daily News ( about The Misfits) "... as Marilyn and Gable engage in one of those battles of the sexes that seem eternal in their constant eruption. It is a poignant conflict between a man and a woman in love with each other, with each trying to maintain individual characteristics , and preserve a fundamental way of life."
This statement sums it up for me, and for Marilyn as well.
