The author spent a total of fourteen years as a government employee in the far reaches of northern Canada. Her years of experience make this book a valuable addition to literature about the Canadian Arctic. "I have written about life a I saw and experienced it at Arctic Bay in the far north of Baffin Island... and of the joy of living among unpretentious, decent people in a land of unsurpassed beauty."
I didn't know what to expect going into this book, so I was pleasantly surprised at how much I was enjoying it. Ms. Hinds was sent to a small village above the Arctic Circle by the Canadian government to be a white teacher among Eskimos. Her insights into the people and the culture are pretty profound, and her love of the land, especially the flora, comes across vividly. I am looking forward to reading more of her books if I can find them. It seems as if her popularity has dwindled to where only one of her many books is even on Goodreads, (I had to add this one, making it the second,) so unfortunately it might be awhile.
