Jeremiah, a Devotional Commentary: An Inspirational Guide through Troubled Times

Rate this book
Nobody wants to be Jeremiah, who lived through God's judgement on his culture. But looking at our own culture today, we may have more in common with Jeremiah than we'd like. How do we stand for righteousness and still relate to an ungodly world? In the stories of Jeremiah's life and times, we see God's reckless love and offer of forgiveness. They are stories of hope for our day and encouragement for our lives.
Jeremiah survived attacks on his life. He endured war and famine. He stood against kings who would have killed him. He suffered depression, but in spite of it, he thrived and found his satisfaction in the living God. He was a tutor to kings and prophets. He was a messenger for God. He was a friend to any who would accept him. Jeremiah is both a powerful inspiration and a gentle encouragement that God's plan for us is to give us a hope and a future, regardless of our past.

There are many valuable lessons for life to be found in the Bible. Regardless of religious beliefs (I’m best described as agnostic), anyone can gain insights from the collection of material in the Bible which has been preserved for millennia. It’s been preserved through history for good reason: The writers and later curators had important messages to pass on to us.

I appreciate a modern day review and retelling of the principal characters from the Bible and the author, Tom Birch, does an amazing job of not only covering the life of Jeremiah but also spending time on why certain events that happened were important at that particular time. The book is not a dry historical telling of a person long dead.

This sober and thought provoking book took me far longer to complete than I expected simply because I had to stop at several points and consider the parallels to our modern day problems. I’m not a Christian but I firmly believe there is Right and Wrong in the world and that people can perform evil acts. The life of Jeremiah provides context for what is Right and Wrong, appropriate action, and then encouragement which is especially needed in today’s world.

The author pulls information together to make the life of Jeremiah more understandable, digestible, and transferrable to what is going on around us now.

Jeremiah - a Devotional Commentary is a great read and I highly recommend it.

I am so happy that Tom Birch took the material he has been teaching for a couple of years now and put it into book form. This is not a dry historical study but a living connection between Jeremiah's time and our own. Tom has managed to condense an awful lot of detail down to it's most essential minimums in order to connect the dots for us, the modern reader. If you want to be challenged in your personal life with the lessons learned from a book a few thousand years old then sit back and take your time ingesting the truths of "Jeremiah".

The author did a fabulous job of breaking down a very complex and difficult book of the Bible to bring historical understanding as well as insight for today. It would be a good book for a book club or personal study because there are many topics that could be discussed and/or pondered. It is easy to read, but the subject makes you pause and think quite a bit. Definitely would recommend it to family and friends.

I received a free ebook via Voracious Readers Only for my honest review.
