Book snobs may look askance at a book published by the English Tourist Board, but this is a gem. Burke is a well known scholar, whose prose is clear and charming. He can be sardonic without being snarky. The book is well illustrated with photos of English antiquities and with maps, and effortlessly organized a wealth of details as travel guide and comprehensive overview. Yet it also had a human face. I didn't know that there were temples of Mithra in Roman Britain, and that soldiers from Turkey and possibly farther away served on the northernmost fringe of the Roman Empire. It's only lacks a timeline. But now I'm convinced that when you did deep in English soil you find a bit of Rome.
