The Cancer Crisis in Appalachia: Kentucky Students Take ACTION

Rate this book
Kentucky has more cancer diagnoses and cancer-related deaths than any other state in the nation, and most of these cases are concentrated in the fifty-four counties that constitute the Appalachian region of the commonwealth. These high rankings can be attributed to factors such as elevated smoking rates, unhealthy eating habits, lower levels of education, and limited access to health care. What is lost in the statistics is just how life-changing cancer can be―something that editors Nathan L. Vanderford, Lauren Hudson, and Chris Prichard have endeavored to address.

The Cancer Crisis in Appalachia features essays written by a group of twenty high school and five undergraduate students, all of whom are residents of Kentucky's Appalachian region and are participants in the University of Kentucky Markey Cancer Center's Appalachian Career Training in Oncology (ACTION) program. These authentic and candid student essays detail the effects of cancer diagnoses and deaths on individuals, families, friends, and communities, and proclaim these cases as more than nameless statistics. The authors shed light on personal cancer stories in hopes of inspiring readers to avoid cancer-risk behaviors, get involved with cancer-prevention initiatives, give generously, and uplift cancer patients and their loved ones.

25 cancer related stories
25 Kentuckians impacted by cancer
25 reasons to take your health seriously
“Providing information one time will not solve the problem; the key to ending this issue is consistent and repeated teaching.”
If you are from Kentucky, or have been impacted by cancer, you will relate to every page of this book. Written by high schoolers and college students from the eastern Appalachia regions of KY, cancer diagnosis is unfortunately a common conversation for most families in that area. Kentucky has more cancer diagnoses and cancer-related deaths than any other state in the nation, and most of these cases are concentrated in the 54 counties that constitute the Appalachian region of the commonwealth. I have summed up these stories utilizing the basic first aid acronym, RICE (rest, ice, compression, elevation):
🤒 Recognize symptoms
📚 Inform and educate
💪 Change habits
🔎 Encourage screenings
In Kentucky, obesity and tobacco use are two of the leading factors why we are at the top of list for cancer rates. Small lifestyle changes can help decrease these numbers! Read a book, go for a hike, recycle, talk to your doctor, understand your family history, and put down the tobacco products.
The book aims to educate and inspire readers to take ACTION to lower cancer rates in Appalachian Kentucky. For more information about ACTION, visit the program's website:
