Adele is dying?and Jean is helping her. The two elderly cousins of After You have come back to the family cottage on the Findlay Islands of Ontario's Lake Kawartha so that the stroke-ravaged Adele may die with peace and dignity amid their old girlhood haunts. But, while Jean methodically administers the required drugs, memory refuses to let either woman go gentle into that good night. The cottage and lake conjure up the ghosts of their former selves, and of the young man who was, to their minds, the "fork in the road" that determined the path of their lives.
2.5/5 I want to see this play! Reading it took a lot of concentration, mainly to figure out what kind of story was trying to be told with having both old and young versions of the main characters tell a story together. Once I got the hang of the story, I was really compelled by the dynamic between Adele and Jeanie, and I love the characters of their older selves showing how different they became as they got changed by life. Paul is a dirt bag, but Jeanie is complex and meddling enough that I wonder who’s more at fault at the end. I would love be to be in this or see it!
