This year, I applied to the program the author of this book participated in (in 1997-1998), so my parents decided I needed to read this (it's written by a family friend) before I committed (not that I'm even into the program yet...I'm not). It was a very, very cool look at the life of a gaijin in Japan. I think my parents meant me to change my mind about the whole moving-to-Japan thing, but what I learned most was that there are up sides and down sides to living in any place, and that Japan has its own particular joys and difficulties. I think it made me more excited to live in Japan than it made me less excited. I would like to experience some of the same things myself, though hopefully not in the far south of Japan like where Ken lived. Though apparently it did snow there--wow!
Also, it was cool that some of the letters were written to my mom.
