Roy Harris Jenkins, Baron Jenkins of Hillhead OM PC was a Welsh politician. Once prominent as a Labour Member of Parliament (MP) and government minister in the 1960s and 1970s, he became the first (and so far only) British President of the European Commission (1977-81) and one of the four principal founders of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in 1981. He was also a distinguished writer, especially of biographies.
This is a serious, heavyweight biography, both in length and substance. Roy Jenkins, himself a prominent British politician, brings deep insight and political experience to this detailed portrait of Churchill. What I really appreciated was the balanced approach: Jenkins doesn’t gloss over Churchill’s flaws (imperialism, Gallipoli, etc.), but he also doesn’t diminish the scale of his achievements, especially during WWII.
The writing is elegant, at times dense, but always intelligent. Jenkins digs deep into Churchill’s character, his contradictions, and his remarkable career with thoughtfulness and a touch of dry wit. It’s not a quick read, but if you’re into political history or want a thorough, fair look at one of the 20th century’s most iconic figures. Block plenty of time to get through this one, but totally worth it.
