Thank you June for this informative book. I am a healthcare assistant in a nursing home and read this to try and put myself in the shoes of the residents and their families.
Thank you for reminder that I need to set up power of attorney and ensure all my family members have too!
I discovered this book in my favourite Waterstones in London (Piccadilly, if you really wanted to know!) on a display table. I have been looking for an informative and educational book on this topic for a while but the amazon searches weren't doing it for me. I feel like this book was just what I was looking for, and was staring me straight in the face! With my Dad now in a Nursing Home after a brain injury, I was desperate to find out more. This is a topic that you don't talk about with your loved ones. Except for the 'don't put me in a home' flippant remarks. I have never visited a care home/nursing home, let alone had a loved one in one! And so, me being me, I want to find out everything I can about new scenarios.
June Andrews has written such an important book. Not everything was relevant to mine and Dad's situation but the majority of it was. It was so eye-opening and I really needed this book to help me understand the overall situation and help put things into perspective. I urge anyone that feels overwhelmed by the care home/nursing home situation to give this book a read - I promise you will get something out of it.
It took me a long time to read this book, not that it was too dense or difficult in language, but it's the topic that is difficult and obviously very personal. Andrew's writing is so calming, and makes what could have been quite an overwhelming reading experience into something more like a hug. I will be keeping this book to refer back to as and when I need it. The charity section at the back is super useful too.
Thank you June Andrews!
If anyone else has any recommendations for similar books I'd really appreciate it?! xx
