I was really liking it, great book, great basic principles and pastel art principles and then in the last chapter came an image of a naked and crucified man, apparently symbolic of the persecution of Jews. So, the book's okay, and two stars.
Dawson's mastery of color is consistently evident in his work. I found myself asking constantly "How'd he know to put (insert color) there?" and reassessing the way I perceive color in my everyday life. His insights on the behavior of light and color are informative and straightforward. While this book is focused on working with pastels, many concepts can very easily be applied to any medium.
I studied with Dawson. He has a very interesting approach to using a pin hole type approach and only 3 colors and values. Very successful paintings come easy.
