Sarah Orne Jewett was an American novelist and short story writer, best known for her local color works set in or near South Berwick, Maine, on the border of New Hampshire, which in her day was a declining New England seaport.

I’ve read two of Sarah Orne Jewett’s novels but never short stories. What was I waiting for? They are clearly as attractive as the novels. No writer could take you into rural late nineteenth century New England like Jewett. The settings and characters are lovely. She’s sometimes criticized for plot weakness but I don’t see any reason to complain here. A few stories have partial settings in Boston or New York and one even takes place in post Civil War Virginia. The writing is lovely without being the least bit sappy. Characters are very natural.

The word that comes to mind after reading these stories is gentle. These are beautifully written tales of rustic folk, farmers and tradespeople, mostly. The stories are slow-paced but very entertaining.

I love her books, beautiful descriptions of flora and just nice stories.
