So this book was not anything like I thought it would be... if you read the synopsis it talks about ancient curse destroying a family... really not my cup of tea... but I gave it a go.. read in one evening!!!

This is a book that takes you from one family, to another and you think what??? But it’s connected and it’s fantastic.

There are triggers.... child molestation, suicide, miscarriage

But I can’t wait to read the next book in the series...

This book was provided to me in exchange for an honest review.

I read this book and it was really good, I felt such sadness for the Characters and I was also surprised with the curse. I would have loved to have heard more about the curse and that past.
At first i felt confused with why we heard stories about two different people and different times, but it all came together nicely.
I am reading the second book in this series and it is keeping me just as engaged as this book did.
I will say this book did pull at my heart strings and other shock emotions.

This was a very good book. It is sad that I'm sure something like this could really happen with being adopted. Life is precious and we should enjoy everyday. I am a Voracious Reader and received this book free to read.

Received a complimentary copy of this novel from the author through Voracious Readers Only in exchange for an honest review.
This sad tale of love and death centres around Mary, Trevor and Julia, whose lives are tragically and dramatically entwined. This was an interesting tale with lots of twists and turns, although the ending was a surprise, some of the build up was a little obvious. The characters are interesting and engaging and very relatable and you feel both their tragedy and happiness.

After connecting with the author of 'A Curse of Torment' & 'Suffocating Secrets' on Facebook, I decided to order these books through the authors website. After reading the first one, 'A Curse of Torment', I was so pulled in and was pleased with how well and precise everything was explained. I was surprised with a twist I didn't see coming and I ended up being both sad, and mad and happy throughout the story. I was not disappointed with my purchase!

Death and misfortune seems to follow and haunt Mary’s family. While there have been times of happiness in her life, they always seem to be immediately followed by multiple tragedies. Somehow she seems to be spared from the accidents that follow and steal all sources of happiness from her over and over again. But why? Will it ever end or is her family doomed to have their moments of happiness continuously destroyed in the worst possible ways?

I don’t often read books that seem to focus so much on the unfortunate things that happen in one’s life, and to have them happen over and over again through several generations made me begin to wonder if there really was a point to everything happening to this poor family? After a while there was a clear pattern and I could easily predict what was coming next or when happiness would turn to disaster.

In the end I did learn reason for the misfortunes that haunted this family. But after such a big buildup, to me the ending almost felt like it came too quickly. I felt as if everything were too neatly wrapped up in a bow to end the story. And as odd as this may sound, it doesn’t change the fact that I did keep reading to the end. Despite the fact that I saw much of the story coming, I enjoyed it enough to decide that I do want to read the sequel.

I don’t think that this story is for everyone though. One of the major plot points involves a young girl being raped and getting pregnant by a man who was supposed to be watching over her when her parents were away. (This event is not depicted in the book, the reader only learns about it after her pregnancy is discovered.) Still, it might be a bit of a trigger point for some and thus I felt a need to mention it.

Something about this story definitely stuck in my brain and keeps rattling around in there, making me think about it again as time passes. I’m not entirely sure that I can really explain what it is that keeps me thinking about it, but I will be continuing on and reading the next book. Maybe then I’ll be able to understand what it is about this story that has struck me so strongly. After all, a good story is one that keeps the reader not only engaged at the time, but thinking about it after they’ve finished reading it, right?

First, I want to thank E.A. Owen for providing me with this book so I may bring you this review.

First time author E.A. Owen debuts her new novel A Curse of Torment as part of her series Tragic Mercy. E.A. picked the perfect title for the book as her characters are sadly tormented in one way or the other throughout the book.

This book is for E. A.’s dear friend K.C. She wishes life had turned out differently for you.

When an author asks me to give them an honest review that is what I am going to give them. I care about my reader and feel they deserve honesty. I also feel if there are things in the book that the reader may not feel comfortable reading about that I will bring it up. A Curse of Torment is no exception. If you are offended by these topics, it will cause you emotional distress, or mental health issues, I suggest you don’t read this book. This book deals with rape of a caregiver of a young child who becomes pregnant, incest, suicide, and brutal miscarriage.

In my mind when I was reading this book it really should have been three separate books. The first part of the book hands down was my favorite part of the whole book. E.A. for being a first-time writer need to continue writing like this because this is what she is killer at. This section was suspenseful, jaw dropping, tear jerking moments, amazing storytelling at it’s best, and you felt a connection with the characters. I loved hearing about Mary’s and Natalie’s story. Their story I was most interested in.

Second part of the book for me a disconnect from the first part of the book. Mary and Natalie went MIA (I wondered where they went why we weren’t hearing about them) and we got introduced to more characters. The second part of the book was good-but-not as strong as the first. It wasn’t til the very end of that I put the pieces together of who the characters were. It was about this time we saw Natalie again.

I don’t care for spells or curses so that whole section I was not a fan of and didn’t think it fit into the story line.

I will not be reading the next book in the series.

Hello My Fellow Book Dragons.

We have a set of Gems today, by the Authoress E.A. Owen (dony you love that name?). A delightfully freakish pair under the subtitle Tragic Mercy. The covers are fantastic and well represent the stories.
The first book, A Curse of Torment, introduces us to the Walker Family. A seemingly perfect family living the American Dream. For four years everything everything goes well, but then a dark cloud rolls in. And seems never to leave. Tragedy, torment and death follow no matter where Mary, the oldest daughter, goes.
How can one human being have so much bad luck? A curse, placed upon her family in the 1800’s has found a host and shadows her no matter where she goes, who she loves, how hard she tries…and the creep factor grows with every page.
The second book, Suffocating Secrets, continues where the first left off. Mary’s grandson now carries on. Trevor Williams is a sympathetic character. A good father, husband and grandson, he does his best to bring his family happiness despite the curse. Will Trevor succeed? To tell more would tell too much. You must find out for yourselves, and I heartily encourage you to do so.
I thoroughly enjoyed these books. They remind me of Bronte,Poe or James. Modern in setting, they have a definite Gothic feel. The characters are very likeable, they tug at you. I wanted so desperately for them to be happy. I caught myself talking to them more than once, which is rare for me unless thoroughly captivated. And I was.
Both books can be read stand alone, but I suggest you read A Curse of Torment first, simply because you will really feel the atmosphere. They can be purchased at EAOwenbooks.com or on Amazon. Remember, this is the last day to get in on my giveaway ..go to my Tales From The Book Dragon FB page for details.
I received these books from the author for in exchange for honest review.

Bad Blood by E.A. Owen
Publisher: Twisted Karma Publishing

Thanks to the author E.A. Owen for an ebook copy of Bad Blood.

Mary calls her life a nightmare, but the pain has only just begun… and Mary will not be the only victim. Mary was born into a perfect family, her mother and father were a storybook couple. But they were both killed by a drunk driver when she was only 12. She grows up to marry a man who betrays her, and her teen daughter is victimized by a family friend, and ends up pregnant and gives birth to twins.

That is just the beginning of an entire family’s descent into a series of devastation that amounts to more than can be blamed on just bad fortune, including the greatest sin imaginable, committed unintentionally and born of nothing less than true love.

Mary wonders why life can be so cruel. Years later she discovers the complexity of which she is a part of and the terrible truth. The main characters relationships are revealed as fate brings the survivors together, some bound by blood and love but all of them bound by a curse.

I give this book a rating of 5 stars. It was a well written book. There were many twists and turns in the book. About more than half way through I kind of figured out part of the truth. The book was hard to put down and it kept my attention. Very big shocking and surprising ending. I highly recommend reading it. I look forward to reading more books from E.A. Owen.

I got this book free in exchange for an honest review. I will try my best to not write in any spoilers. Ok, so this book follows a family that is seemingly cursed. They have love and happiness, but it is ripped from mercilessly every time with torment and death. It was an interesting read, though I figured everything out about halfway through. If you don’t pick up on all the little tidbits, you will miss it and be surprised at the ending. I however dissect books when I’m reading, so the ending was not a surprise for me, lol. It was well written, but you don’t get a chance to get to know any of the characters and bond with them. Overall, a decent read. Thank you.

I find it refreshing to read genres that are alien to my writing. The Curse of Torment is a story of innocent people who share extreme bad luck. Some of them know they're related, others are oblivious of the fact. Trevor investigates the bloodlines when his daughter needs a heart transplant. What he finds out: I didn't see it coming! The name of the book might give you a hint but still, what an ending!

Normally I would not read this type of book because there is alot of trauma and dramatic actions. ( I work in the mental health field) I normally read books to get away from that. As reading the book it felt like it was all over the place but in the end was all tied together.

Tragedy central! Oh my goodness. I was not prepared for the amount of horrible things happening within the first 50 pages. It was a bit much, even with the synopsis. There was a lot. I really did like Mary and Natalie and wish there was more of their story. The first part of the book was heartbreaking and gut-wrenching. The second part put me to sleep. It seemed that Mary and Natalie disappeared. There wasn't a smooth transition between parts 1 & 2. The curse angle didn't work for the book and didn't make sense. I really wish I would have enjoyed the story more, but it was a bit lacking in some areas.

I thought this book was well written. The story line had its twists and turns and kept me engaged throughout. The story, while tragic for most of the characters, had some silver linings throughout. I liked all the characters and they were believable and and able to relate to. I did, however, wish the story continued on with the first section of the book. Parts 2 and 3 were well written and engaging but I felt the 1st section was where the strength in E.A.'s writing lies. I look forward to getting the second book in the series and seeing where the story takes us next.

This was a very quick read for me (2 days). Because of that, I wish I could have learned about each of the characters more. Although I enjoyed the story, I was able to guess the next tragic event to happen. The story was lacking more suspense. I thought the ending was clever but also a little random for the fit of the story. Overall, I enjoyed the quick read and would read another book from this author.

I give this book 3.5 stars. It reminded me of the old Hee Haw song with the line- “if it weren’t for bad luck, I’d have no luck at all”. Seems unbelievable that so many bad things can happen in one slim book. I liked the premise of the a family curse, but the sheer volume of bad circumstances didn’t flow for me.

Mary has had a hard life. She has experienced many difficult times in her life. But she has held strong. Every time life throws something at her she bounces back. She has experienced great loss and pain. The tale will come full circle bringing all characters involved back to each other as they are all bound by the same curse.

So when I first started reading this book I had a hard time getting into the story. The very beginning of the story seemed a bit flat. It started out with the character as an adult and sort of flashed back to give her whole life story in very descriptive detail. But as the story went on and moved forward it started to pick up pace and reveal the actual plot.

This book is a very deep and twisted tale of a family and it’s curse. The curse has a voodoo vibe to it. The characters are well written and developed. This book is not told by one main character point of view, but is told from several different characters. Though the book is a bit more descriptive than I like, it was a good story. The twist to the story is easy to figure out about midway through. And boy is it a train wreck. Wow! I don’t know how I would have handled that situation had it happened to me. This story is sure to shock you as it has me.

If you are into deep family secrets and voodoo curses, then this book is right up your ally. You are sure to enjoy it.

Review: This debut novel is a very quick read with an interesting twist. The book starts with Mary’s account of her childhood and leads up to a tragedy she and her family experienced. The beginning was a little slow for me, and I felt like some of the family history was a little unnecessary. It could have been condensed a bit.

When Mary is an adult, her family is put through yet another tragedy when someone she loves and trust betrays her, and her daughter suffers the consequences. Mary is trying to move on from her past, and we are introduced to two teen characters who are facing their own set of tragedies. I was really lost when we suddenly switched to new characters without any warning, but I pushed through and continued on. The ending ties up everything for you, but I wish there had been more warning, like maybe label the change in characters to “Part II,” or something similar.

Final Thoughts: Overall, I thought the story was unique, but the writing style was distracting to me. The writing is the reason I gave this three stars instead of four stars. I did not see the twist coming at first, but looking back, I should have predicted it! I was so distracted by other things happening in the story, but I think that is a good thing. I prefer not predicting endings! You can read this novel on Kindle Unlimited too, so if you are a subscriber and like a good family mystery/thriller, I encourage you to check it out.

Although it's not on Amazon as a Young Adult book I would definitely say it is. I thought this book was going to be suspenseful with ups and downs. It was anything but that.

The book starts off good, telling you about the life of Mary and what happens to her poor daughter. That takes place during the first few chapters. The rest of the book is about a teenage boy and girl that meet, an accident and this love at first sight type of relationship they have. Nothing suspenseful or even interesting happens until your reach the end of the book.

Then ending has quite a nice twist that I didn't expect but the curse was fixed way to easily. There needed to be more than just the kids falling in love and the accident to make this book better. If the author added some kind of weird situations, made the ending longer and the curse removal have some kind of suspense, I think this could have been really good.

The story is there, but it needs major editing. The voice is off in the beginning, jumping from the different characters through time needs to be more seamless. Lots of loose or unnecessary threads left hanging.
Full disclosure: I was given this book for free through Voracious Readers in exchange for an honest review.

This book was a whirlwind of emotions but in a good way. The descriptions of some of the houses and other scenery, left you feeling as if you were there. Parts of this story made me want to cry and left me feeling a whoa that's crazy state. I like how in the end everything was brought together!
