When parents need guidance on raising gifted kids, they can turn to Success Strategies for Parenting Gifted Expert Advice From the National Association for Gifted Children . This collection of practical, dynamic articles from NAGC's Parenting for High Potential
Do not be intimidated by this volume! It looks like it could be a text book, but really it’s a multi-faceted handbook. The book is comprised of more than 50 articles, most less than ten pages long, making each article very accessible and readable for whatever challenge or question you may have. The articles are broken up into thematic sections such as identification, advocacy, social-emotional needs, and educational programming. It not only discusses parenting those with academic giftedness, but also those with artistic giftedness. How to well support children who have “2e,” which means twice exceptional, ie having both giftedness and another condition, such as ADHD or a learning disability.
I am blessed to be parent to two gifted daughters, and though I have only had this book a relatively short time, it has already informed my thinking about how I am parenting and relating to my girls. The article, “30 Things Gifted Kids and Their Parents Need to Know” proved a great jumping off place to encourage me in my conversations with my daughters.
Because each article is concluded with reflection questions it is also a great resource to use as a self-paced and directed study, for all of us who feel a bit out of their element when parenting their gifted children. I would also serve as a great book for a book study group of parents or teachers who want to better support students with giftedness.
I really appreciate how this reference covers how to support our gifted children from early childhood through the teenage years. I am certain I will be pulling this volume off the shelf many times over the next several years.
