Da Capo Press, New York [Published 1970]. Hardcover edition, unpaginated; illustrated with facsimiles and engravings ; 19 cm. Da Capo Press series in graphic art, v. 9. Reprint edition of the 1662 first edition, with a new introduction by Jacob Kainen, Curator, Department of Prints and Drawings, National Collection of Fine Arts, Washington, D.C. This Da Capo Press edition is an unabridged republication of William Faithorne's original treatise, first issued in London in 1662, which became a landmark work on the techniques of engraving and etching in English. The book includes as a supplement the title page from the posthumous 1702 edition and the chapter added to that edition describing construction of the copper plate press and the method of printing plates. Faithorne's manual, drawing on Abraham Bosse's earlier French text, presents detailed technical instruction for artists of the seventeenth century, covering tools, materials, plate preparation, design transfer, etching with aqua fortis, and printing, with numerous engraved illustrations of equipment, processes, and results.
