In this paranormal fantasy, chapters alternate between a vampire and a young woman, as they join an ensemble cast to navigate difficulties and discoveries of desire; perils of zombies and vampires; and struggles with friendship, morality and... college.
Vol. 1: Fatal Infatuation Felicity views going away to college as an opportunity to mature into a confident young woman, but her new beginning turns out to be more of an adventure than she bargains for when she finds that her school is plagued by vampires!...Cain is an elder vampire who displays quiet confidence even as he struggles to overcome sins of his past. Surprisingly, he found that in losing his life he gained his faith and a purpose...His mission: find the hostile vampires that inhabit this small college town, and educate them to live in peace with humans. Their leader, Sindy, is a wicked temptress who has set her sights on Felicity's new friend Ben. She will be difficult to control, but after meeting Felicity, Cain's most difficult task lies in controlling himself.
Vol. 2: Lost Reflections Felicity has helped her friends to escape the venomous vixen Sindy, but cannot divine the motives of Cain, the vampire who captured first her gratitude, and then her heart...She finds the historical account of Cain’s past enthralling and frightening. Now she must determine whether the addictive venom in Cain’s kiss is clouding her judgment, and if his thirst for her blood is a driving force too strong for their love to conquer...It’s difficult to contemplate such questions while under the attack of a vengeful vampire and his zombie slaves. Felicity’s heart has already been lost to Cain; will she lose her life as well?
Vol. 3: Evolving Ecstasy The relationship between Cain and Felicity has crested to a peak that leaves them unsure whether to step back from each other for safety, or jump into a future united in death...The venom of Cain’s bite could protect Felicity from hostile vampires, but it would give him a measure of psychic control over her as well. Would Felicity only accept becoming a vampire, due to his addictive venom, coupled with the foolishness of a young girl in love?...Perhaps there is a brighter future for her in the human world. Is Cain’s desire for Felicity’s love worth the loss of her life?
Melanie Nowak is author of the venomous vampire series ALMOST HUMAN, and a happily married mom of two boys. She holds a Master's Degree in Library and Information Science, and lives with her family on a peaceful mountaintop in the forest of upstate New York. She has always had a vivid imagination and a fascination for the paranormal. Acting and singing are loves of hers as well. However, upon conceiving the idea for her ALMOST HUMAN series in 2003, she discovered a previously unknown passion for writing! Now she puts her over-active imagination to good use, creating characters she loves, and she gets to play all of the parts!
I bought this trilogy based on the overall scoring and the reviews posted and I was not disappointed. Many of the reviews compared this trilogy to the Twilight series. I am a huge fan of Twilight but was not looking for this series to be identical; I wanted this trilogy to be completely separate and carry on a story of its own (which it did). I realize that there were some similarities, but I did not feel ALMOST HUMAN was simply taking the Twilight stories and just inserting new character names. In short, keep these two series separate - do not compare the stories since they are completely independent and both great in their own right.
So, about the ALMOST HUMAN trilogy... The characters were great, I loved or disliked them based on their role as (I hope) was intended. Of the characters that are in the "loved" bucket, I found their development and personalities very well defined. Even the characters that were secondary or minimally engaged were well defined. The "bad" characters were complex by way of not being 100% bad - they teetered between good, misunderstood, and bad really well.
The relationships really made the stories endearing. So many various relationships and hopes and fears within them... They reflected a lot of the relationships you encounter in life quite believable - showing that one person can have so many different types of relationships with various people, not one was one-dimensional.
And the love story? Oh my goodness, talk about chemistry (both physically and mentally). Ahhhh and swoon... That's all I am going to say. I loved it...
I really loved that the story had alternating points of view between the main characters. That aspect of the trilogy removed a lot of the "what was he/she thinking while she/he was acting this way," etc. The only thing regarding the alternating perspectives is it seemed as though the thoughts that Felicity had were sometimes phrased more as how I would imagine Cain would speak (more formal vs. teenage/young adult).
From a more technical standpoint: The editing missed a few things, yes, but I don't think it was anything that took away from the story as a whole. It needs to be understood that this author is completely independent, the writing, editing, and publishing was self managed. It is hard to catch every single error, however the size, when a professional publishing company is handling the process. To edit your work yourself would be even more challenging. Again, yes, there were some errors or some oddities, but nothing that I found to be unforgivable or even distracting from the overall story.
To sum up - The story pulled at my heartstrings and really left me completely anticipating the continuing trilogies. I would recommend this series without hesitation!
Fantastic series. Highly recommend these 3 stories in this first trilogy about vampires. The 2nd trilogy continues with Born to Blood. Awesome read. Melanie Nowak is a terrific author who gives us character depth and ties the reader emotionally to these characters. You'll fall in love with Cain and Felicity as well as other characters in this storyline. This first trilogy sets the stage as the plot begins to thicken in the 2nd trilogy Born to Blood. Anxiously awaiting the next book in the Born to Blood storyline. As good a read as Twilight. If you loved Edward you will definitely fall in love with Cain. Your heart will ache for Cain's love for Felicity and definitely be left wanting more from this author.
I've read a lot of paranormal books and I have to say that this book is my absolute favorite. The characters are relatable and you find yourself really caring about what happens to them next. The author really pulls you in and you don't want to put the book down for a second. I can't wait until she releases the next book.
I have read all three books of this wonderful trilogy by a new upcoming and very talented writer.
Melanie Nowak has written an exciting Trilgy of a young teenager Felicity, off to her first year of sleep-away college in an upstate rural town. She works in a bookstore with a coffee shoppe attached, very close it was told, to the Borders bookstore in Ms Nowaks hometown.
We meet Cain, a 340 yr old vampire, who is in town to protect the locals from a rash of deaths due to his people. In this story we come to see the history of Cain, how he was turned, the life he lived, what he did good and bad and why he is who he is today. He falls in love with Felicity and this story and their story is sensitive and appealing . It moves rapidly thru a host of other characters Ben, Ally, Sindy and Mattie who we all come to love.as well.
Each book continues as the other leaves off so you would like to read them in order. Ms Nowak has just published a 3 in 1 for the readers as well
I await the Second Trilogy First story Born To Blood which continues the saga...I highly reccommend
This series is entirely predictable and is more like a beach read. Completely forgettable characters. The writing is simplistic. One female character seemed way too eccentric that seemed like the author was trying too hard and others were becoming annoying. There is a whole range of characters but focuses on Felicity and Cain, and later on Ben, in this trilogy. It's a standard plot of college girl meeting hundred something year old vampire Caine and their growing love. Oh, and a bit of 'adventure'. I saw this series in Amazon and it's very misleading - it's not Urban Fantasy and it hardly counts as Adventure; it's just vampire/romance.
Cain, to me, is a total asshole despite all the sweet 'cooing' and 'loving' to Felicity - while thinking of another female character. Yo, here's another gloomy vamp that curses his own immortality (insert own tragic, tortured past) until he found the 'light' in his plain human. Cue eye roll. The lines bordered on cheesy and made me cringe when it was supposed to be 'witty'. Though I admit it was adorable when they were together. Happy for Felicity even though she wasn't a strong heroine (not physically) during that time. However, a character's dialogue changes every now and then - annoying. One volume focuses too much on Cain's past - I did not like the heavy info dumping on that thank you. I'd say this book is bittersweet; I loved the ending. It kinda caught me offguard but I was silently rooting for them anyways because I honestly hated Cain at that point. Not the standard HEA, but I appreciated it cause it was realistic and I prefer them instead. The pacing of the story was okay, but it did bore me when it stayed too much on one event. For example, Felicity and Regina in the room but Felicity's thoughts wandered off about Cain for a while and it lingered too long when she talked with another, Ben asleep, in the shower. But then it suddenly jumps too fast on another. The pacing of the novels is wacky but sometimes just right. Oh, and there are view points we are treated to so we can see their POV, not only on Felicity's. And what is up with the spelling mistakes?
ETA: More on the character takes. Since I wasn't too interested in them, I keep forgetting their names but I remember their actions. Felicity was okay. Another teen female heroine that acts mature for her age but she makes mistakes, just not entirely stupid. I guess it makes me wonder why immortals guys fall for teenage girls. *shakes head* I'm still eighteen but I cannot connect with the characters, regardless of the addition of vampires. Regina seems better than boring Felicity even. The author didn't provide or show a reason what was so special about Felicity that the guys were drawn too. She did that and this, but I didn't find a reason. Hell, Ben is the only character I liked. And there is sex. Not erotic or hot, just sweet lovemaking and not that frequently. Still, I'd label this for older YA.
End result: It was okay, its not a book I'd read even on a rainy day. Forgettable and I won't bother to read the next books. The writing needs to improved because honestly, it was too simple and bordered on fanfiction style writing. (Too much: "then he turned" "then he sat" "then she realized" "then then then) I guess people have different opinions and too many positive reviews that I thought what the hell in trying out another casual vamp/romance/teen book. Nope, average and wasn't amazing to me at all.
When I read all of the positive reviews and the story line I was sold and ordered the Trilogy. Once I started reading it I was hooked within the first few pages of the story. The characters are so believable and approachable. Great writing skills and rythm! Loved how the stories alternate in first person narration between the 2 main characters, Felicity-a wonderful normal average freshman college student, and Cain-a 300+ year old vampire who's strong, humble, tortured soul who struggles with a self appointed crusade of redemption as he tries to find inner peace and forgiveness while trying to make a difference and change other vampires towards a non violent co-existence with humans. Very well written. Loved all of the back stories and history that author infused into the story to build the characters. The love story between the characters is lifting and gut renching. Honestly can't wait for the next installment. Hurry Ms. Nowak gift us with the next volume as quickly as possible! If you're looking for a well written, heart-felt, emotional (yes, be prepared to laugh & cry quite a bit), interesting new series to read and fall in love with, then read this one as it fits the bill perfectly. Thank you so much Ms. Nowak.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It made you feel like you were a part of what was going on. The characters were awesome!! I have always liked the books that made your really hate a character through a good portion of the book and then really like them at the end. I won't spoil this for anyone and tell you who that character was for me but I thought all of the main characters was awesome!! I also like to judge a book on how well the descriptions of the characters and the scenes are. No disappointment there, the book played through my head like a movie. The book was both well written and flowed well! i can't wait to read the next one!! This is a great book, don't miss out!!
AWESOME, AWESOME, AWESOME book! This book reminds me a lot of the Twilight series, but a bit edgier. I couldn't put it down. The end of this first trilogy leaves me wanting for the next book. Can't wait!
Overall the whole trilogy gets a fantastic 4 out of 5 gnomes for having intriguing characters and vampires who have a lot of personality. I really like how this trilogy is set up because each book leads right into the next and you never know what's going to happen next so you end up getting drawn right into the story. Each chapter is set up in the beginning almost as if it's a play or on TV. It can vary among the chapters but you learn everything from who's going to be narrating the chapter, what time it is, where this is happening, and what day of the week it is.
The main character Felicity is the new girl at college and kind of has a whole country mouse turning into a city mouse kind of thing going on. This country mouse is being introduced to the fact that vampires do indeed exist. Unlike some other recent literary characters that seem fine about vampires existing, Felicity is not sure at first what to think about it.
There is plenty of relationship drama across all three books. You see the beginning, middle and end of one relationship then the start of another. Somehow though I don't think that these relationships may stay stable at all. There are two love interests across the three books. Ben is the first guy that Felicity meets, he goes to the same college, and works in the The DownTime Café and Bookstore (the same place that she works). He lives in town with his Dad who's not home a lot. The reader of course can tell that Ben really like Felicity but of course she has no clue for quite a while.
Cain, an extremely old vampire with a very literal name, ushers Felicity into the world of vampires when he saves her and later when she finds out that he is a vampire. There interactions are great but he's almost more intriguing as a character when you see his actions and thoughts when he's not around Felicity. I do like the fact that they both know that the relationship between them has a not so great chance of working out. Cain has plenty of flaws but Felicity is slow to catch on to that fact. In the second book the reader gets to see what Cain's life was like before he became a vampire, seeing this glimpse is enlightening to why he is the way he is today. The relationship of Felicity and Cain is well done even though I did want to slap some sense into one or the both of them at different times. They even have a whole Ross and Rachel moment thrown into the works which thankfully is brought up in the book.
I like that the author shows the flaws in the vampires that shes created. It's not easy for a human to have a relationship with these vampires. They have venom in their saliva and other body fluids so whether they bite someone or kiss them, they'll find themselves becoming addicted to venom and craving it just like a drug. After being bitten the person is marked as well the property of whichever vampire bit them. Their venom and bite lets them trace the location of the person they've bit and have some sway on their actions. The one plus to this is that the human can also sense if the vampire is close.
There is more then one villain but Sindy is the main big bad that starts it all. She was young when she was turned into a vampire but she has a real thirst for power. Sindy and her group that she's made into vampires are not practicing the best vampire habits and are pretty noticeable. Their hassling of people and making of poorly made vampires are the reasons that Cain comes to town in the first place. He tries to teach vampires the ways that he lives by and if they don't agree he at least tells them to not kill the people that they take blood from. Complications ensue because of Sindy's actions and that she also wants to be with Cain and Ben. Because of these feelings of course she doesn't really like Felicity at all. I have a feeling that Sindy's going to be an important character in the future and I really like that she's not just a one dimensional villain.
Each book ends at a great point but I would recommend reading it as a trilogy. I love the endings of all three books because they either leave you laughing or contemplating what could happen next. This is especially true with the end of the third book which shows a promising direction for the future and ends with Felicity finding out some very intriguing information. These characters were fun to read about and there are still secrets and stories to explore so I'm really looking forward to reading more from Melanie Nowak.
My review: Volume 1: Fatal Infatuation First of all I loved this book right from the first chapter. I loved the characters especially Felicity, she has everything going for her but doesn’t seem to realise it. She is a well rounded character and has been written in such a way as to make you believe she really does exist, of course she also has character traits but this makes her all the more lovable. Cain is an in depth and intriguing character who has not only lived many centuries, wants to follow his beliefs even though that wars with what he has become. You never really know which side of himself he is going to follow especially when it comes to his flaws, and of those he has a few, the biggest one appears to be Felicity at the minute. I loved the whole story-line, finding it well written, captivating and enthralling and addictive all at the same time. Credit goes to the author in bringing the world to life, giving all of the characters their own identities and making the whole story believable. You can truly loose yourself within the book feeling and growing with the characters as you go, and in places the story line even gave you thought to visit your own morals and what you would do in a given situation. I really enjoyed this first in the series and will be continuing on in this trilogy book.
Volume 2: Lost Reflections The second volume follows well from the first leaving no gaps, I love the way Felicity is growing and maturing, finding new strength and discovering her inner self. We gain more in depth knowledge of her life and the way she perceives everyone around her. She grows in confidence and depth. We find out so much more about Cain and his back story, leaving the reader with no questions as to who he was and what he has done, this brings to light a whole different side of him that is both shocking and intriguing. The growing relationship between the pair is well written and well worded making the reader feel as if they are feeling and going through everything with them both. This includes the ups and downs within the relationship, as well as bringing to the fore the relationships that are growing between all of the main characters. We see a different side to Ben and Allie, with new discoveries being made about both of their pasts. I love the storyline and felt that is was well written, enticing and enthralling, giving the reader all the emotions needed to carry them through and feel everything with the characters. The action scenes were well written and believable, and the love scenes added by the author made the book all the more believable and interesting, giving the reader a believable and well structures romantic side to everything going on.
Volume 3: Evolving Ecstasy This is an amazing last part to this 3 volume book, with love laughter and sadness. I loved the continual development of the characters, finding the twists and turns in the story-line really well developed, even if I was not always able to see them coming. The relationships are becoming more intense and in depth making the reader feel all the emotions and following with everything that is happening. The story line leaves only what it needs to in order to make the reader think about what is actually happening, I felt that I always wanted more and did not want to put the book down without finding out what was going to happen next. The author has managed to continually bring a world in which I can immerse myself whole heartedly in, feeling, loving and laughing along with Felicity, Ben, Allie and Cain. They have truly rocked my world. I loved everything about this series and I can not wait to start reading the next set of books within this series to find out what else is going to happen. I recommend this series to anyone who is a lover of paranormal romance, as this has everything you need to get lost. With amazing characters, awesome writing and believability it is a must have for the more adult readers of this genre, I believe you will love what you find within theses pages.
It has been weeks since I read this book and till this day I am still thinking about it and recommending it to everyone. I just can not get it out of my head! I came across this book on Amazon when I was looking for a new e-book for my Kindle. The cover sorta pulled me in, but what really did it were the reviews on Amazon. So many people on Amazon had so many great things to say about this book so I went ahead and got the sample, read the sample and then went ahead and bought it. So glad I did! How can I write this review without spoilers... hmmm Doubt I can! So beware!
What I liked the most about this book was that the world and characters Melanie Nowak created were very believable. Some of the things in this book happens in real life on daily basis, of course not the whole vampire stuff haha, but school, work, life in general. So it was very easy to relate to her characters and be pulled into the town like if you were living there as well. It was not hard at all to feel like you were there at every scene just watching it all play out.
*****SPOILERS***** NOT MUCH!
Ben, Felicity and Alyson become really close friends and are very much aware what lurks around their town. Ben hates vamps with all his heart, Alyson could careless and Felicity is just still getting used to it in book one. I think it was so cute how Felicity and Cain started out. Cain is shocked that Felicity even spoke to him the first time and then offers to hang out with him. He slowly begins to feel this pull to Felicity only to find out that the whole time Felicity had no idea what he truly was. Once she does though it pops open a jar of emotions and confusion. She does not know if she should pull away from Cain or continue to speak to him. Of course it does not help with Ben hating vamps so much and putting things in her head.
Cain and Felicity slowly begin to trust each other and man the can of worms that opened up. I really liked them together and let me tell you, the scene Melanie Nowak wrote between Cain and Felicity on their "First time" gave me goosebumps and turned my cheeks red. I never had a book make my whole body tingle from just reading a love scene. The scene was written so well that I felt every single emotion they were feeling towards each other. While I was reading I had to keep putting the book down because I just couldn't believe how real it felt. It was just perfect in every way!
Sindy, who pretty much thinks she is such a bad ass and creates her own little gang of vamps to follow her. At first I hated Sindy's character, but somewhere down the line you learn the truth behind Sindy and sorta feel sorry for her. She lived a rough life before being turned and never really had anyone to love her.
I feel like I am giving way to much away! lol
Everything in this book just went together perfectly. From the first page until the very last. Honestly, there were so many things I thought I knew was going to happen and was shocked when it went in a whole different direction. This book was well written and has a little bit of everything. You'll cry a little, laugh a little, scream a little and be in shock from time to time. Don't let me get started on the ending of this book!! I am so torn right now because of the way this book ended. I no longer know what I want for Felicity.
I just love this book and can not wait until the second part (which will be another trilogy) released on May 31, 2010. Hopefully! I definitely recommend this book.

Author: Melanie Nowak Genre: Paranormal Romance, Fantasy Romance (Vampires) Length: Box Set Approximately 646 Pages

First, let me just say that I am exhausted after reading ALMOST HUMAN - THE FIRST TRILOGY by MELANIE NOWAK. I couldn't put it down, and I couldn't stop thinking about it when I had to put it down. I fell so head over heels in love with these characters that I had a difficult time sleeping because I worried over them so. As a reader, I want to be involved with the characters and feel their joy and pain as they do. I want the words to escape the page and form pictures in my mind as if I were truly there with them experiencing everything as they do. Ms. Nowak did just that with this trilogy.
The ALMOST HUMAN first trilogy is more a serial than series and must be read in order. This can be a difficult thing when the reader is a worry wart like me because I just had to make sure that everything turned out okay for the characters which meant getting up at 2:00 a.m. several mornings just to read. This is not a book that you put down lightly and then just stop thinking about what is happening within the pages. There is not a conclusion to the story at the end of each of the volumes until you get to Volume 3 which ties everything together beautifully. The story just seems to flow from one volume to the next with an ending that will be more than a little surprising to the reader. I thought it was very clever how Ms. Nowak brought everything together in Volume 3. To be honest, it's a very different resolution than I was expecting. I cried (a lot) and then I realized that it really couldn't have ended any different than it did. It was just perfect.
Another aspect of Ms. Nowak's writing came shining through as Cain (one of the oldest living vampires and known as The Teacher by other vampires) describes the faults and drawbacks of vampires. I thought this was so refreshing because most vampire romances depict them as heroes rather than the dark entities they are meant to be. Thus making Cain, in my eyes at least, a true hero.
I can't wait to start the second trilogy, but I'm going to give myself a day or two to recover from reading the first trilogy. I need some sleep. The ALMOST HUMAN - FIRST TRILOGY by MELANIE NOWAK is an AMAZING read and I highly recommend it.
This is one of those books that was pleasantly surprising. After reading the description, I was leery because it just screamed TWILIGHT. I got this book in the 3 in 1 binding and I’m glad I did--each book ends so abruptly, I would not have enjoyed it had I not had the following book immediately. It is a large book and was pretty intimidating when I sat down to start reading it, but the stories flow so well, that was a detail easily forgotten. I can’t review this as 3 separate books because I didn’t see them as truly separate. The books progress from one right into the next with barely a breath of time between the end of one and the beginning of the next.
The characters in this book were very enjoyable and easy to relate to. The beginning of the book was a bit slow until Felicity comes out of her shell a bit. I loved the friendship between Alli, Ben, and Felicity. The dynamics of their friendship seemed very true to life, like any new friendship you’d make when you go off to school. Cain and Felicity’s relationship bothered me some at first because Felicity was so young and naïve, falling in love very hard and very quickly. Cain was a fascinating and complex character. He would’ve been a great character in the book even without his relationship with Felicity. I was surprised at how my feelings for Sindy changed throughout the book. One minute I hated her evil ways and the next I felt sorry for her and wanted someone to just give her a chance.
The story itself is filled with deep emotional struggles and twists and turns that keep you desperate to know what happens next. Each character had his/her own struggles throughout the story so that you always had something to look forward to instead of reading about only one couple. The end of the book was definitely not what I was expecting; Ms Nowak certainly left us a cliffhanger! I would recommend this book to someone who is looking for something a little more mature than Twilight, but not quite ready for a purely adult vampire romance. It’s well-written and unique in a genre inundated with young vampire romance books. I look forward to seeing what twists the author throws at us in the next trilogy.
This one is a tough one to rate because I actually liked the first 1 3/4 of this trilogy. It had a bit of a "Buffyesque" feel to it. So for the first book... it was basically a "builder" with average characters with a bit of uniqueness that I slowly but surely enough began to like. The main character, Felicity, a sweet and innocent young lady of 17 with a bit of kick to her. The main guy character, Cain, a 300 and odd years vamp who is trying to mend the ways of his terrible past. So they try to make things work...all slowly but steadily.
Then, at 3/4 of the way through book 2 after what I thought was a pretty neat backstory of Cain... he says... 'this isn't going to work we're done'. So she goes home to her family for her 18th birthday celebration. Somehow this turns her into a wild sex vixen who from that point on wants to spend day and night under the sheets with Cain. And at this point he also blows all of his progress of "mending his ways" out the window and decides to use whichever women may come to knock at his door in every which way.
So then we go into what's basically a bunch of sex with "fillers" in between. And then in the end he just takes off and basically says 'well it's been fun'. Great message there.
Sigh... anyhow... it's frustrating because I liked it until almost the end of book 2 and after that it was kind of a chore to get through for me.

I'm going to start with what I didn't like about the First Trilogy so I can get that over with. I found that in chunks of the book the story seemed to drag a bit and some things were over explained with information I felt I didn't need. Also the size of the book is intimidating to say the least lol I would probably go and buy the first trilogy in the 3 separate books instead of all in 1 if your intimidated by a huge looking book. Ok now that that is over I can start with what I liked. The characters were great. Felicity goes away to school to find out that vampires exist and ends up falling in love with Cain. Cain is a super old vampire that travels to teach the young vamps how to live a life without killing people etc, etc. Ben is Felicity's very first friend at school that hates vampires with a passion, Alyson is Ben's best friend since childhood and has a crazy streak in her. I cant really go into relationships much because that would totally spoil the book for you. I would defiantly compare Almost Human to Twilight but a little steamier, Melanie was great with explaining things in the chemistry department. All in all the heart of the story was enjoyable to read, you end up caring about the characters and what happens to them, I liked the ending of the trilogy. It was a good start for a new author and I will most likely continue the series to see what happens in Born to Blood.
I tried. I really did. But I hate, loathe, despise writing that is this immature.
The author does alot of telling, almost no showing, and stuck to simple sentences with nearly identical sentence structures.
An example: "She looked at the size of the speakers compared to the size of the bar. They were going to be deaf by the end of the evening for sure. Alyson noticed her and jumped down to meet her."
By itself, that's not so bad. But imagine it page after page! She did this. She did that. She thought this. She thought that. SO BORING.
Wouldn't it be more fun to read something like this?: "As she made her way through the dimly lit bar, her eyes widened at the sight of speakers onstage. They were huge! She could say goodbye to her eardrums. Alyson stood next to one, dressed in an all too revealing top and obnoxiously chewing gum. Spotting Felicity, she gave a boisterous wave and jumped down to meet her."
I can't comment on the plot because the writing turned me off so badly that I couldn't read more than a third of the way into it.
This is a MUST READ series! Absolutely one of the best vampire series ive read to date. it makes you laugh, cry, and at some points yelling why! the charactors are so wonderfully written you cant help but to love them all even the villians.
i dont want to be repetitive in description about what the book is about but i do want to describe what i loved most about this series. the relationship between felicity and cainis has growth! i hate those girl meets guy and they are automatically fall in love stories. i loved how you get to watch things flow naturally into place. i love how each charactor has flaws and theyre not perfect. its not drawn out which is a huge plus! the story is continously moving and consistant.
i recommend this book to everyone who will listen. i cant waited wait for book two of the second trilogy to come out! i am so for team cain!
I would've given this book a 5 star rating, if Cain's (male lead character) internal struggles wasn't so dragged out and annoying. Eventually I skimmed over his thoughts because I already knew how he was feeling. It felt like the author was trying to see how many different ways she can convey the same message throughout all 3 books. He wants her, wants to turn her, but doesn't want to force her and turning her is the only way to make their relationship work. Wow! check that out! I just summarized all of the hundreds of pages written about Cain's internal struggles and did it in one run-on sentence...
This is such a great series! I read all published books in less than a week, and am anxiously awaiting the release of descendents of darkness! I highly recommend this trilogy its one you cant put down. Immediately you feel so close with all the characters. I love reading reviews on this series. We must support Melanie, I'd love for this series to become a movie for us paranormal romance readers!!!!

This is another story with multiple switching POV's which I found hard to get into but boy am I glad I did. Without spoiling too much (or anything hopefully) the character development and world building left me wanting more in all the best ways. The story reminded me of Twilight but not enough that I felt like I was reading a fanfiction or ripoff. The characters grew and my feelings about them grew and evolved and left me at times thinking of them as if they were real people; frustrations, sadness, joy and all. The only downside is at times certain scenes can seem very long and drawn out and are somewhat hard to get through without that "finally!" feeling at their conclusion which I felt took away from the book for me slightly.
This book ended up, while being slow for me to start, one I finished in one sitting much to the irritation of my household and I feel like that says all in our busy worlds these days.
This trilogy was recommended to me by a friend. I started off slowly reading the first book but was captured by the characters and their development and quickly read the three novels. The books grew on me and I found I had to keep reading, couldn't put them down. It became clear that like humans, no two vampires were alike. Their personalities and histories ran the gamut from violent/non-feeling creatures we typecast as vampires to moral, kind and caring individuals. The author engaged me in love stories, friendship dynamics, families as well as scary moments. I met charming, mean, mysterious, abused, hard working, petty, caring, loving, jealous and violent individuals......human and vamp each with their own story to tell. I look forward to reading the next trilogy and highly recommend this author.
Almost Human is a refreshing take on the vampire genre. I really enjoyed how the story blended romance, danger, and supernatural intrigue without feeling overdone. The characters are easy to connect with, and the pacing kept me wanting to see what would happen next. A solid start to the trilogy that makes me want to continue the series.
