The Amazing The Incredible Super Dog is very humorous picture book written by Crosby Bonsall. Bonsall uses satire to create a short scene of a little girl putting on an “Incredible Dog Show” for her cat, to try to motivate her cat, Willy, to be as ‘awesome’ and ‘talented’ as her dog, who in reality is more lazy than talented.
As this little girl puts on this show, she announces loudly and confidently all the “hundreds of tricks” her dog can perform on her command. However, Bonsall tells a complete separate story from the text with her well executed, humorous drawings. The girl shouts out tricks her dog can perform to her audience of one, but the pictures say otherwise.
Every trick announced throughout the skit this girl is putting on does not seem to be accomplished by her dog, who would rather spend his time lying in the grass and eventually even taking a nap. However, Willy is doing the announced commands without any problem. From a trick as simple as “roll over”, to a more complicated jump through a hula hoop, Willy the cat can do them all, meanwhile the dog lie asleep carelessly.
The little girl doesn’t even notice the tricks her cat is doing because she is so focused on believing her lazy dog can do them all. Even at the end of the book she tells Willy he should learn some tricks to be more like her dog.
