Advent 2019: A Thrill of Hope

Rate this book
I wait for the LORD; I wait

and put my hope in his word.

—Psalm 130:5

“O holy night! the stars are brightly shining; It is the night of our dear Savior's birth.” From the earliest promise of His coming in the garden, to the angelic announcement of His birth in a field outside of Bethlehem, the hope of the world is Jesus, the Son of God given to rescue and redeem a broken and weary world. In this four-week Advent reading plan, we will prepare our hearts for the celebration of Jesus’s birth by reading traditional scriptures of the season, approaching anew our need for Christ and celebrating the glory of His arrival.

She Reads Truth is a worldwide community of women who read God's Word together every day. Founded in 2012, She Reads Truth invites women of all ages to engage Scripture through curated daily reading plans, as well as online conversation led by a vibrant community of contributing writers. This community of “Women in the Word of God every day” represents a long list of cities and countries, a variety of backgrounds and traditions, and countless real-life stories. But there is a commonality that binds us: we believe God's Word is Truth. So we read. Every day we read a new passage together—working our way through books of the Bible, topics that matter, and seasons of the Church calendar. We engage with God's Word and with each other. And we keep coming back, on the hard days and the good days, because God and His Word never change, regardless of our circumstances.

Over the past few years, I’ve begun reading books and devotionals on the theme of advent during the holidays. This devotional by she reads truth did not disappoint. I love the way Old Testament prophecies and New Testament passages about Christ are woven into the Christmas story so beautifully in this devotional. I also appreciated that passages I’ve never given much thought to, such as the lineage of Christ, have been highlighted and expounded upon, bringing new meaning to the text for me. Sprinkled throughout the book are Christmas carols and holiday recipes and crafts, which is a really fun addition as well.

Umm ... A very pretty book, but it was only scripture passages. No commentary or interpretation. Occasionally a quote, but not many. A few “Christmas crafts,” but that’s not really what I’m looking for in a devotional. I have friends that use She Reads Truth daily, and apparently the app has commentary on the scripture passages. Otherwise, why not just read the Bible.

“A Thrill of Hope, the weary world rejoices”.

O Holy Night – one of my favourite Christmas hymns. And I’ve sure been feeling weary these last few months. This for me was the perfect reading plan for Advent – getting ready to celebrate Christmas in the best way possible – by reading the Bible.

I love how, as always, the focus of this book was the Bible passages for each daily reading. But interspersed with those passages were delightful little extras – sheet music for Christmas songs, gorgeous Christmas recipes and Christmas crafts that I bought the materials for but ran out of time to actually complete (next year, maybe?).

My favourite moment of the entire reading plan was coming home from midnight communion on Christmas Eve, and sitting on the windowseat in my bedroom while the busy house (with family sleeping over) was silent, and absorbing myself in the Christmas Day readings. Before the hustle and bustle of Christmas Day, having that time to quietly read was just what I needed.

This advent reading is my favourite so far! It's been so sweet to start from Genesis and see how the God was setting the world up to meet Jesus in Matthew. So many promises, so many hints and alusions. It's been great to see how the whole Bible is really about Jesus and his purpose he came on earth with: to die in our place, to take the punishment for sin upon himself and give us hope.

I loved the path of scripture throughout the month that continuously focused on Advent as more than just a remembrance of a baby in a manger at Christmas, instead pointing to Christ and redemption. The photos were lovely, and I tried my hand at a few of the projects and recipes that were certainly an asset to the Christmas season.

Enjoyed this a lot. It was a very peaceful and relaxing read that followed the traditional Jesse family tree study of Advent.

I did not do a great job at being consistent with reading this study during the 2021 advent season when I worked through it, but I love the way SRT set up the season and use it to prepare your heart

I love this Advent study for She Reads Truth as well as the 2017 and 2014 studies. The booklets are gorgeous with beautiful photography in between the 4 weeks of Scripture readings and space for journaling. Every year, I read through the Scriptures as well as my notes from the devotionals. This one goes through the Christmas story, but leading up to it are devotionals with prophesies regarding Jesus' birth as well as other passages about the importance of Jesus coming to earth.
