"Pots of bulbs need a gentle acclimation to increased temperature and light. It is a trauma to be abruptly removed from a cool, dark place and exposed to burning sunlight, as anyone who attends a movie matinee will attest."
Useful, informative, witty, delightful. Picked up from the used book table at the local cooperative extension Master Gardener plant sale, and cracked open around New Year's upon discovering a forgotten bag of tulip bulbs in the basement (ah shit!). I intended to flip directly to the sections I needed but ended up reading the book cover to cover because I just found it so lovely and pleasant. The surprising humor struck such a chord with me that I did look up the author (he's fam!) and the photos of his garden that I found are really spectacular.
Overall I liked the overview that the book gives on many kinds of bulbs for indoor culture - it helped me consider which I might like to seek out. There's enough detail to get started with, and if there's a particular plant that strikes your fancy, you can always get more information from a larger or more specific tome. The photos and watercolor illustrations are also nice. Just a really pleasant, useful, and enjoyable read, especially for the middle of winter. Pray for my tulips!
