Many surprises in this collection of letters! First, Marquis struggled financially all his life and was rarely out of debt, mostly because he produced "serious" plays that were bombs. In fact, he once said that all he would have been remembered for was writing about a god-damned cockroach! He was a deeply religious man who once produced a three-act play that consisted mostly of Jesus speaking from the cross; quite bizarre! There is a sadness to his letters that comes through in some of his Archy poems.
